German Fest a wunderbar experience

Even though it rained during the weekend of April 22, 23, and 24, 2022, there was a bright spot. It was the annual German Fest in Muenster, Texas. Muenster is a town near Texoma and has been in existence for well over a century.

In fact, Muenster originated in 1889 when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railway constructed a line from Gainesville, Texas to Henrietta, Texas and a small group of German Catholic settlers decided to start up a town along the railway. This new beginning was reason enough to have a festival that honors and highlights German food and tradition.

Anyone who attends the annual German Fest can easily see why the event has been going on for decades and remains a hard hitter in the Texomaland spring festivals. Judging by the how full the parking lot was, the rain did not damper festival goers’ plans.

German Fest is home to an annual bicycle rally and even a foot race. The festival welcomes both the indoor and outdoor crowd as the indoor facility at Heritage Park is over sixty thousand square feet under the roof. The campus even has a grandstand fit for any venue.

Having attended this event annually for decades gives me the right to say this year was one of the best. The crowd was elbow to elbow.

The food typical to the event and was the classic German staples including sausage of all types, fresh German potato salad, classic sour kraut red and regular, strudels to die for, homemade breads, schnitzel, pastries, and a cornucopia of festival foods.

The midway included thrill-seeking rides, some classic games, and a few activities to test your skill and luck. The indoor bandstand featured classic German music and dancing and the outdoor bandstand featured local artist of multiple genre and both were spectacular.

To mention German Fest and not talk about the beer, beir, and steins would be detrimental. The beer trailers were in full glamour and included domestic and classic import and German brews of all types. Of course, a patron could purchase the famous extra-large beer stein and fill it up as many times they wanted, at least it appeared this was an option.

A glance around at the crowd revealed attire including bicycle clothes, casual dress, and traditional German attire including Lederhosen (short leather pants) with suspenders worn by males, Dirndl (a ruffled apron dress) worn be females, and all sorts of Tracht or regional clothing. The hats were impressive as they included the classic chicken cap, large beer stein, and even a few that resembled Robin Hood’s hat and, of course ball caps, from all over the country.

To say the least, German Fest is an event that a person can count on being traditional, but one should also expect to experience a period and a culture well preserved and presented. German Fest is sponsored by The Muenster Chamber of Commerce.

If you are one of many who look forward to the many festivals of spring in Texomaland, then German Fest should be written in ink on your calendar for next year.

it is spectacular and always has great attendance, food, music, dance, vendors, and a grand nostalgic feel that one could almost imagine being in Germany or at least be confident that a big part of Germany is in north Texas. A big ole thank you is in order for all who contributed to yet another Wunderbar German-Fest and the big old Willkommen feeling that stepping into heritage park always shares.
