Local Buncombe Creek resident Patti Coburn offered a free sourdough making class at the Shay Community Center on July 8. Not only did she host the class, she provided everything participants needed to learn the art of sourdough baking.
In addition to demonstrating how to make sourdough bread, she shared techniques for creating a variety of other sourdoughrecipes.Attendees enjoyed a fun, informative and hands-on learning experience. Coburn limited the class to 10 participants, creating a small atmosphere where everyone had the opportunity to take part.
She began by introducing the “Easy Sourdough” bread recipe and then guided attendees through the process step by step. Along the way, she explained the science behind sourdough, discussed the ingredients and demonstrated how to create and maintain a sourdough starter.
Everyone had a chance to participate in mixing and preparing the dough. Many guests who have never dealt with sourdough before found this class to be the perfect introduction.
Coburn also brought a variety of freshly baked sourdough samples, including dinner rolls, alfredo crab pizza, cookies, sweet rolls and loaves of bread, giving attendees a taste of the many possibilities that can be made with sourdough.
Coburn noted that she might host more classes in the future. To keep an eye out for any future sign-ups, follow the Buncombe Creek Community Facebook page.
