Redskins claim basketball district title

The Kingston Redskins closed the basketball regular season with a sweep of Plainview last week and the boys captured the district title in holding off Lone Grove.

Both Kingston teams will be in regional tournament winner’s bracket play on Thursday when they travel to Lone Grove. The Lady Redskins, who received a district bye, open with Davis at 6 p.m. with the Redskins tanglingwithMarlowat7:30.

Coach Chad Rumer’s girls closed with a dominant 6128 triumph over Plainview as they raced to a 19-3 first quarterleadandneverlooked back as four players all scored in double figures.

Kingston was up 31-12 at halftime and continued to pour it on after intermission, leading 48-20 at the end of three periods.

Joley Heydon was the offensive catalyst with 15 points with Cassidy Walker notching 14, Jaci Herndon 12 and Avery Ludrick 10. Coby Davis also contributed six points with Taylie Wiebener and Ryleigh Markovich tossing in two apiece.

The boys’ contest was a bit more eventful as it was neck-and-neck throughout the first half with the Redskins clinging to a 20-18 edge at the break. Coach Bobby McAdoo’s squad then rode a balanced attack to a 16-7 scoring advantage in the third quarter in taking command.

Sam Walker and Blane Henry pumped in 14 points each with Brock Rumer also hitting double digits with 10 points, all of which came in the second half.

Lander Burkhalter chipped in six, Hudson Everhart had four while Cole Bridgman and Isaac Hahn pitched in two apiece.

In the district playoff contest, Kingston took the lead early and gradually increased it ahead of a monster run by the Longhorns in the final frame that was aided by the Redskins’ struggles at the charity stripe where they connected on just eight of 16.

Kingston was in front 11-7 after one period, 23-14 at halftime and 36-22 following three stanzas. Lone Grove nearly doubled that scoring total in the fourth however with 16 points, but it was not enough to erase the deficit.

Nobody reached double figures for the Redskins, although six players all tallied at least six points fueled by nine from Hayden Seeney.

Everhart and Walker contributed eight each, Henry scored seven as Burkhalter and Rumer both posted six points.
