Bankruptcy a no go for park owner

Months ago, The Madill Record reported about a neighborhood on Lake Texoma. The Marina del Rey park wasunderfireaftertheowner failed to fix the sewage pond.

Since then, tenants have been trying to relocate and some haven’t had much luck.

The tenants are upset about the shape the park is in and how their homes have deteriorated.

“It’s sad. I mean to drive through and see the damages,” resident Paul Shepherd said in an interview. “Not only that, but it’s affected our property values as well, which is certainly a concern.”

Park owner Garrett Johnson got into a dispute with his insurance company a few monthsago.ThisledJohnson trying to claim bankruptcy on the park.

Recently, a judge dismissed Johnson’s case and sided with the insurance company who was contesting Johnson’ bankruptcy claim.

Johnson purchased the park in 2016 and many residents thought Johnson would improve the park. Unfortunately, thathopewas short lived.

“It was really nice for a fairly short period of time,” Alan White told KXII. “Up front it seemed to be noticeably better, but it’s been going downhill since then.”

Much of the marina was damaged from a batch of storms that hit the area long before Johnson attempted to file for bankruptcy. Some of the spots have deteriorated even more.

“The boat houses are now almost uninhabitable,” White continued. “There’s no power, there’s no water. The roofs have blown off of most of them.”

Many residents are upset by the fact that Johnson lives “high on the hog” while the area suffers.

“You see Garrett driving a Mercedes or buying multimillion dollar homes,” White said in the interview. “You got three or four of them here, but nothing happened to the marina. It doesn’t take a financial wizard to see that perhapstheinsurancemoney that’s coming forward is not being spent where it should be. That’s how it appears.”

The court appointed a third-party receiver to get things done. Residents stated that they are seeing progress.
