Mullins appointed USDHS secretary

A major political shakeup could soon reshape both Washington and Oklahoma after President Donald TrumpnominatedOklahoma U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin to serve as Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security. The nomination, announced in early March, comes after the removal of former Homeland Security Secretary KristiNoemandmarksoneof the most significant cabinet changes of Trump’s current administration.

If confirmed by the Senate, Mullin would leave his seat representing the state of Oklahoma in the United States Senate, creating an unexpected vacancy in one of the state’s two Senate positions. Mullin was first elected to the Senate in 2022 to complete the remainder of the term of longtime Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe, who stepped down due to health issues.

Under Oklahoma law, the responsibility for filling that vacancy would fall to Governor Kevin Stitt. The governor would appoint an interim replacement within 30 days of Mullin officially resigning his Senate seat. However, the appointment would only be temporary.

Becausetheseatisalready scheduled to appear on the ballot during the 2026 election cycle, the appointed senator would be required to sign an oath agreeing not to run for the position when voters elect the next senator in November. The temporary appointee would serve only until the results of the 2026 election are certified, meaning the appointment could last less than a year.

Political observers said the situation is likely to set off a competitive race among Oklahoma Republicans eager to claim the seat permanently. Names already being mentioned as possible candidates include U.S. Representatives Kevin Hern of Tulsa and Stephanie Bice of Oklahoma City, along withformerOklahomaHouse Speaker T. W. Shannon.

For Oklahoma, Mullin’s potential move to the Department of Homeland Security could have mixed implications. On one hand, the state would temporarily lose a sitting senator while the transition takes place. On the other, having a former Oklahomalawmakerserving in a powerful cabinet position could give the state a stronger voice inside the federal government.

The Homeland Security secretary oversees a massive federal agency responsible for border security, immigration enforcement, disaster responsethroughFEMAand protection of critical infrastructure. Politically, the vacancy could also reshape the state’s leadership landscape.

Oklahoma is considered a reliably Republican state, meaningtheeventualwinner of the GOP primary would likely be favored in the general election. Still, the open seat creates a rare opportunity for ambitious candidates across the state to step onto the national stage.

For now, the next step lies with the U.S. Senate, which must vote to confirm Mullin’s nomination. If confirmed and sworn in as Homeland Security secretary later this spring, the move would mark a significant moment for Oklahoma politics, opening the door to a new senator while sending one of the state’s own into the president’s cabinet.
