A couple of critical turnovers in succession shifted the momentum in the first half to dig the Madill Wildcats a hole which they could not recover from in a 35-0 loss at Pauls Valley last week.
It was a positive performance overall for the Wildcat defense that held it’s own for the most part, despite getting put in tough spots with their backs to the wall following the miscues.
“We were able to play a four-quarter game,” head coach Wade Couch commented. “We turned the ballovertwicethatgavethem some easy scores and then gave up a cheap touchdown at the end that extended the lead. We did a lot of good things that we can build off. Our coaches continue to preach the positives though. It has looked so much better on both sides of the ball than at any time last year. It’s just not showing up on the scoreboard for us.”
The offensive side of the ball for the Wildcats continued to sputter with good moments but also mixed in with several plays for losses in yardage. Rodrigo Cruces had 38 yards rushing to lead the way.
Defensively Madill tallied a handful of stops into change of possession but could not take advantage of those.
Brylon Gibson and Cruces tied for team-high honors with 10 tackles apiece while Juan Narvaez chipped in seven.
“We showed some flashes offensively but they were few and far between,” Couch said. “Brylon, Rodrigo and Juan were really consistent defensively for us again. Alan Montalvo came in and did well.Hehadthreetacklesand was around the football quite a bit. Kevin Garcia did a good job filling in at linebacker and Darian Perez filled in well at corner as well.”
Madill returns home this weekfortheAnnualMarshall County Super Bowl when unbeaten Kingston rolls into town.
The Redskins have been putting up impressive numbers while off to a 2-0 start in district play in their first year in Class 3A.
“They are an awfully talented unit,” Couch added. “Know what they want to do and do it well. They are very consistent all the way around and have a physical line. The quarterback is really shifty and they have good receivers. They execute extremely well and are solid all the way around.
“We don’t have anything to lose so we’ll give it our best shot.”
