Wildcat soccer splits nailbiters with Ada

The Madill High School soccer teams split a pair of district barnburners with visiting Ada on Saturday after dropping verdicts to Harrah earlier in the week.

In the opener, the Lady Wildcats used a late rally to force overtime but a miscue in the extra period proved costly in a 2-1 loss.

It was another overtime affair in the boys’ battle but Madill prevailed on penalty kicks for a 2-1 decision.

Madill returns to action on the road at Ardmore Friday night.

Coach Nathan Fitch’s club notched a solid performance early in the week against a very good Harrah squad before coming up on the short end of the score.

Defense dominated the first half for both teams as the Lady Panthers notched the only goal on a tap in off a crossing shot with 28 minutes gone in the contest. McKinzy Nance was stellar in goal however, stopping every other shot before intermission, including a pair of massive saves.

Harrah controlled possession much of the second half and finally broke through with a goal in the 72nd minute and then tacked on two more late.

Madill had a great opportunity to get on the board but just missed tying the score on a shot by Hadon Stuckey which the Harrah keeper made a nice play on. Fitch also pointed to the solid performance of captain Zamirah Mata in the midfield area.

TheLadyWildcatsstarted well in the Ada contest before yielding a goal from eight yards out just past the 10-minute mark.

Mata, Itzel Trevino and Anayah Sage all contributed shots on goal but the best chance was a near miss from freshman Uriana Rivera from just in front of the net. Mata also provided a great header off a corner kick that narrowly missed the net.

Madill’sdefensecontinued to stymie the Lady Cougars after the break and they finally broke through with three minutes remaining whenTrevinoslottedthrough a blast into the bottom left corner of the net to tie it.

Ada however took advantage of a penalty two minutes into the extra session on a handballandscoredthegame winner.

“Overall we’re not happy with the loss but on a different day the result could have been different,” Fitch said. “We are missing three starters with injury that was a setback, but we had others step up and do a great job. We are definitely moving in the right direction.”

Boys

Four first half goals by Harrah staked the districtleading Panthers to an early lead that Madill could not recover from in the opening match of the week. The Wildcats managed just three shots on goal in the first half and six in the second against the athletic Panthers.

Things went much better against Ada despite spotting the Cougars a 1-0 lead 16 minutes into the contest.

It remained a 1-0 advantage until only 10 minutes remained in the second half when Yael Corona blasted one into the net off an Alex Garcia assist.

Following a scoreless overtime session the outcome went to penalty kicks. Madill keeper Christopher Narvaez protected the net well, fighting off a pair of Ada shot attempts while the Wildcats won it on a series of scoring shots from Garcia,
