The 2020 playoff season is underway, and the Kingston Redskins hosted the first round of district play on Friday, February 21. The game was held at the KMAC, and the Redskins faced the Davis Wolves. The Redskins won this one easily 56 to 37. Coach Taylor Weibner and his team have now won twelve straight.

This night belonged to Dakota “Microwave” Weibner. The sophomore has teased all season with his shooting ability and on this night it all came together for him.

In the first quarter, the Redskins came out firing. Senior Kaden Johnson coming off an impressive showing against the other Murray County foe Sulphur Bulldogs, eased into two three pointers to get things started. Drew Capps had three field goals and Jase Hays followed with a field goal and a free throw. However, it was Weibner with a long three pointer that really stirred things up. Before the Wolves knew it, the quarter was over and they were looking at a 18 to 7 deficit.

The Redskins defense was also in high gear as they were not allowing much from the perimeter and the Wolves were determined to come inside on the taller defenders. On the offensive end, Weibner decided to pull the Wolves out of the lane to guard him.

They just could not match his quick release and he hit three more three pointers in the quarter. As Coach Weibner was already going to the bench, Brycen Ellisor came in for a bucket. At the half, Redskins carried a 29 to 16 lead to the locker room.

In the second half, Coach Weibner was substituting regularly, especially the big guys. After Jesse Rose had two buckets, he was replaced by Marshall Ludrick who added a bucket. Hays also was getting to the rack and the free throw line - he had five points. Rose was assisting on buckets by hitting the cutters going to the basket. But Wiebner was not finished yet. He sent two more three pointers through the nets. After three quarters, the score was 46 to 25.

The fourth quarter seemed to fly by. Ludrick hit two buckets, Hays and Ellisor each had field goals. Weibner was fouled on his only non-three point attempt. He was two of two from the charity stripe. Price Shore, Gage Gill, Hayden McKinney, and Braden Matchen all finished the game out. Everyone contributed to the win. Final score was 56 to 37.

Final stats: Weibner lead his team with 20 points. Jase Hays added 10 of his own. Johnson, Ludrick and Capps all had 6 points each. Rose finished with four points and several assists. As a team , not many free throw attempts, only 5, and four scored.

Next up on Thursday, February 27, the Redskins will host the Hugo Buffaloes at 8 p.m.

The Lady Redskins of Coach Chad Rumer began the long grind to the goal of another state tournament date on February 21. The Davis Lady Wolves would not be the team to stop them that night. The Lady Redskins won 56 to 28.

In the first quarter, the Lady Redskins came out smoking hot. A 22-point quarter while holding your opponent to 9 points will get you off on the right foot.

The turnovers by the Lady Wolves made easy baskets for Britt Henderson, Kassie Bailey, Avri Weeks, Dana Wagnon and Pressley McKnight.

Weeks lead the way with 6 points, Wagnon had three points, Bailey had two, Henderson had a layup.

But it was the three point shooting from McKnight who had two and Henderson with one that really put Davis behind the eight ball. The defense was steller - 22 to 9.

Second quarter the scoring came down a bit, 10 points, due in part to 6 missed free throws. Bailey was 2 of 2, followed by Weeks who was 3 of 4. Henderson was 0 of 2, Bohannon (T) was 1 of 2 and Wagnon went 0 for 2. Weeks and Bohannon (T) both had field goals. The score going into the half time was 32 to 17.

Any thoughts of a second half comeback were quickly dashed by McKnight and Henderson who were connecting on threes. McKnight had two and Henderson one.

Kamry Bohannon came off the bench and had a field goal. Weeks added a field goal, and was 2 of 2 from the line. After three quarters, the Lady Redskins’ lead was 47 to 23.

In the fourth quarter, before turning it over to their teammates, Henderson added another three and a field goal. Bailey and Wagnon each had field goals.

Ryan Herndon, Lanie French, Emi O’Steen, Raegan Davis, Ethel Stewart, Chole Cargal, Alyssa Henry, and Brittany O’Steen all saw fourth quarter action. The final score, 56 to 28.

Final stats: Weeks with 15, Henderson had 13 and McKnight with 12. Bailey had 6, Wagnon 5, Bohannon (T) 3 and Bohannon (K) 2. As a team the free throws were 9 of 15 for 60 %.

The Lady Redskins and Coach Rumer will be off until the regional continues on Thursday, February 27. This game will be on their home court at the KMAC.
