Burkhalter, Redskins stifle Marietta, 4-0

After suffering a pair of tough district losses to Silo to start last week, the Kingston High School baseball team bounced back for a shutout of Marietta.

The Redskins dropped a narrow 8-7 verdict to the Rebels and then a 7-1 home decision. Coach Darron Henson’s unit got back on track with a 4-0 triumph over the Indians, riding a one-hit complete game pitching effort from Lander Burkhalter.

Sporting an 11-9 record, the Redskins were slated to wrap up the district slate this week against Antlers before returning home Thursday for a non-league matchup against Colbert. They’ll close out the regular season on Monday at Byng.

After falling behind 7-3 through four innings in the Silo opener, the Redskins answered by plating a single run in the fifth and three in the sixth that knotted the contest.

Brady Greene singled and came around to score on a Ewan Weaver double in the fifth stanza and the sixth frame uprising featured a Brock Rumer double sandwiched between hits from Jaksyn Martin and Henry. They also cashed in a Silo error for the tying run but returned the favor in the seventh as the Rebels picked up the win.

Hayden Seeney struck out eight in the mound start, working five innings in which he allowed six earned runs on 12 hits.

Rumer, Greene, Henry and Burkhalter all had two hits in one of the Redskins’ better hitting showings of the season.

Things were much harder to come back in the rematch with the Rebels at home as Kingston managed only one run on four hits. The run came in the sixth when Greene walked, Weaver doubled and Henry plated the tally with a sacrifice fly to cut into a 5-0 Silo advantage.

The Rebels finished it out with two more runs in the seventh as Henry twirled five innings, scattering five runs on seven hits in the loss. Weaver ended with two hits asSeeneyandEthanMowles pitched in one apiece.

Burkhalter was in complete command facing Marietta, yielding the one single, struck out five and walked none while letting his defense work.

Kingston pushed across its first run on a Greene RBI double in the third frame that plated Martin. They cashed in two more an inning later following hits from Reid Patterson andSeeneyalongwith a Marietta defensive miscue. Greene doubled and scored in the fifth for the final Kingston run.
