Memories and Musings: First time with stress

Daddy worked nights and when he got home in the morning he would drive us to school. A boy who noticed that we were riding as he walked to school was our first experience with a bully.

One day after school, he followed us and threatened to cut us with a razor blade. We were scared to death and rushed home to tell our grandmother who was babysitting uswhile our mother worked and daddy was sleeping.

Daddy had to go to the school the next morning and talk to the principal. The boy's parents were called and they said they would take care of it; unaware of how he got a razor blade. He was apparently jealous that we got to ride to school.

The solution was that the school allowed my brother and me to leave school when the bell rang and the boy was detained for about ten minutes giving us a head start walking home. This worked for a couple of days until my brother decided to pull a little girl's pigtail after she kicked him or something. You know how it goes; one starts it and the other gets caught retaliating.

Mrs. Bostick, his first grade teacher, made him sit in the cloak room behind the chalkboard which caused us to be leaving about the same time the bully left. I don't remember if we saw him that evening; but it was probably my first experience with stress.
