Kingston head football coach Brad Hill probably wouldhavebeenhardpressed to envision the Redskins’ run through the non-district portion of the schedule that culminated last week with a 47-13 smashing of Class 6A Putnam City West on the road.
All the Redskins did in a 3-0 start was outscore a solid crew of foes by a combined margin of 155-71 with the closest game being a 20-point margin.
Hill’s club wrapped up the early schedule by racking up 404 yards rushing and adding 90 yards passing to blow past the Patriots in Oklahoma City.
That moves the Redskins into the thick of Class 3A district play this Friday with a road trip to Idabel.
“I thought our defense set the tone early against PC West,” Hill stated. “We got a stop and then scored fast. We played really well and were physical. Our line controlled the game up front. It was exciting to play in a 6A stadium. It was a good trip andanawesomeopportunity.
“Ethan (Mowles) was very efficient at quarterback. He rushed for over 100 yards again. Aiden Polk had a couple of TDs again. We were able to spread the ball around and I was really pleased with how we played. I wasn’t sure how we would come out and respond against a big school. It was just a great game plan by our defensive coaches.”
The Redskins wasted very little time in taking the lead for good when Mowles raced 81 yards to paydirt on Kingston’s third play of the contest. Kayden Fenwick added a 64yard scoring run on a reverse to close out a 96-yard drive that made it 13-0.
Polk had a 69-yard punt return touchdown called back, but Kingston still punched it across the goal line on a Mowles seven-yard burst.
Putnam West answered with a score less than two minutes into the second period that narrowed the gap to 19-7 but Kingston came right back offensively with Polk bolting 37 yards for a touchdown and added a twopoint conversion on a pass from Mowles.
Another 10-yard touchdown burst from Polk added to the lead and Ty Jones snagged a 15-yard scoring pass from Mowles only five seconds before halftime for a 41-7 edge at the break.
Mowles totaled 111 yards on seven carries with Fenwick rushing for 64 on three totes, Polk had six rushes for 57 yards and Jaksyn Martin chippedinapairofrunsfor54 yards. Wyatt Lewis notched 40 yards on six carries, including the final Kingston touchdownofthenightwitha one-yard fourth quarter run.
Jones ended with four receptions for 59 yards with Damien Almos contributing two grabs for 31 yards.
Redskin coaches also credited Jacob Jones for a big night on the defensive line that included a pair of quarterback sacks.
Kingston now sets its sights on a 1-2 Idabel squad that has played a rugged non-district schedule as well, including Class 4A juggernaut Broken Bow.
“Idabel is a really good football team,” Hill said. “They are explosive and have an elusive quarterback and great receiver. They bring tons of pressure on defense. I expect them to stack the box and play man coverage. Offensively we have to hold up to their pressure and keep receivers in front of us on defense.
“They are probably a little better up front than Hooks. They have a little better team speed but are pretty comparable. They are a very fast team. This is a very important game for us because the first three don’t really matter now and we need to get off to a good start.”
