MHS soccer clubs battle through rough patch

Following a full week off due to weather, the Madill High School soccer teams returned to action with a rugged slate of district matchups last week.

The Lady Wildcats suffered three losses while the Wildcats split a pair of onegoal decisions. Their next scheduled outing will be a home contest with Bethany on Monday night.

Girls

Coach Nathan Fitch’s squad saw their three-game winningstreaksnappedwith a 10-0 setback to districtleading Chickasha. They followed with a 2-0 loss to Harrah and then fell to Ardmore, 2-1, picking up their lone goal of the week.

The Lady Wildcats bounced back from a rough showing against Chickasha with a solid performance facing Harrah, but just could never get much of an offensive threat, much less a goal. Madill's lone shot on goal came from Yvette Ariciaga late in the second half.

“The girls just didn’t play to their potential,” Fitch said. “It was another learning experience for us.”

In the week’s finale, the Lady Wildcats hosted Ardmore in a scrappy showdown although they came out of the gates very slow.

Ardmore took a 1-0 lead roughly 20 minutes into the first half and had Madill playing catchup much of the remainder of the match. A pair of first half scoring opportunities led by Arlette Arndrade were just off the mark.

Madill turned up the offensive pressure following the halftime break and immediately had a push with a near miss from Anayah Sage at the 12-yard mark only two minutes into the stanza.

The Lady Wildcats were caught in a reshuffle after an injury to Caylee Martinez and surrendered a second goal. That’s how it remained until Itzel Trevino punched through a penalty kick with two minutes left but the late comeback bid fell short.

“Overall, it was a difficult week for the girls,” Fitch said. “But it’s all part of the learning experiences. All teams go through rough patches, but you have to find a way to respond.”

Boys

Madill fell 2-1 to districtleading Chickasha in the first outing last week despite a strong performance all around.

The Wildcats pitched a shutout in the first half, including five saves in goal by Christopher Narvaez, but the Madill attack was unable to connect on any of its six shots on goal.

Coach Jose Cortez’s squad finally broke the ice in the 10th minute of the second half as Adrian Gomez found the back of the net after a nice crossing pass from Rodrigo Guevara.

Chickasha managed to tie the contest with 10 minutes and scored the final goal five minutes later on a penalty kick. Madill peppered the net for six more shots on goal after intermission but came away empty handed.

TheWildcatsprevailed1-0 in a tight, defensive battle with Ardmore as they scored the game’s lone goal on a driving shot by Sammy Duran off an Alex Orta assist.

Narvaez came up huge down the stretch, turning away the Tiger attack with seven saves after intermission, including four right at the goal line.

“It was a complete team effort, but our defense and goalkeeper really stood out,” said Cortez.
