It was tough sledding for the Madill girls soccer team last week as they dropped an 8-1 district verdict to powerhouse Mount St. Mary. The Lady Wildcats will be joined by the Madill boys when they each return home for a District 4A-1 date with Ada on Friday night. Madill had a couple of good scoring chances in the opening half against the Lady Rockets but could not find the net. The best of those was an open shot from Anayah Sage that sailed just a bit high of the goal from 12 yards out. After 10 scoreless minutes Mount St. Mary broke the ice and eventually tallied four goals in the first half on solid opportunities as Madill was forced to reshuffle defensively after an injury. The Lady Rockets answered with a pair of goals before Madill finally got on the scoreboard when Isabel Stuckey fed Sage for a first time finish from 15 yards out. That proved to be the only Lady Wildcat tally as Mount St. Mary wrapped it up with two goals down the stretch. “Mount St. Mary is probably the best team we have faced,” head coach Nathan Fitch said. “Overall, we are not happy losing 8-1 but there were some positives as we showed that we could put together scoring chances against a good team, which we weren’t able to do much of last season. With an emphasis on creating more chances we knew we were going to expose ourselves more on defense than last year. “Once we find the balance of both as a team as well as having a little more discipline in big moments, I’m confident we will start to win moments and win games. This is only the first game of districts so we’ve still got a long way to go with this young team and they are learning and getting better each day.”
