Lady Cats notch soccer wins, boys split pair

A pair of shutouts propelled the Madill girls soccer team to home victories last week while the Wildcats split contests heading into Spring Break.

The Lady Wildcats finished with a 1-0 win against Classen,takingthematch4-3 in a penalty kick shootout. They followed by grabbing a 2-0 triumph over Lawton.

In boys’ action, the Wildcats fell to powerful Classen, 7-1, but bounced back in style to blast Lawton, 7-1.

Girls

After a defensive slugfest for two halves went scoreless against Classen, scoring opportunities were limited with Madill narrowly missing on one as Zamariah Mata took a centering pass from Itzel Trevino and had an opening from 20 yards out but missed high.

The Lady Wildcats turned up the heat to begin the second half, applying solid pressure in the Classen defensive but could not penetrate the goal, eventually sending it to penalty kicks in a shootout.

Hadon Stuckey continued her dazzling performance in goal, stopping three of the Classen shots while Madill connected four times for the victory. Itzel Trevino, Yvette Ariciaga, Anayah Sage and Zamirah Mata all scored to give the Lady Wildcats the victory.

Facing Lawton, Trevino had three open shot opportunities but couldn’t land any of those. Inay Barrios came off the bench and had a major impact, nearly scoring in the box. Maritsa Aldaba managed to get Madill on the board, pushing past a pair of defenders to slice a shot in with three minutes left in the half for a 1-0 advantage.

The Lady Wildcats never let their foot off the gas following the break, taking control in the midfield behind the play of Mata, Arciaga, Jayleen Vasquez and Julia Santillan.

Stuckey continued to silence the Lady Wolverines and Madill tallied an insurancegoalonaLawtonmiscue with 15 minutes left for the final score. Stuckey finished with four saves.d “Both games Mata and Nayely Cruces put in great performances in the midfield both games,” head coach Nathan Fitch said. “Caylee Martinez made her first start for the program against Lawton and did a great job at outside back. We still need to get a lot better in front of goal but the pieces are starting to fall into place.

“The team is starting to show more leadership on the field and although our performances haven’t been pretty, they’ve been tough and gritty. For me that’s the signs of a strong team. We have three shutouts at home and have made a big point of protecting our turf and have done that so far.”

Boys

The Wildcats opened the week with the loss to an outstanding Classen squad as Misael Trevino scored the loneMadillgoalunassistedin the first half after taking the ball away from a defender, trailing 3-1 at halftime.

Madill continued to pepper the goal throughout the second half but could not find the back of the net, ending with 10 shots on goal.

Christopher Narvaez had 7 saves to spur the Wildcat defense.

In the 7-1 victory against Lawton, Madill raced to a 4-1 first half advantage with a strong attack.

The first goal was knocked in by a Lawton defender after a shot by Alex Orta deflected off the crossbar. They then tackedongoalsbyAdrianGomez, Trevino and Orta with assists coming from Rodrigo Guevara and Trevino.

Madill knocked in three more tallies after intermission on shots by Samuel Duran, Gomez and Trevino. Guevara had another assist along with Orta.

“Guevara, Orta and Osvaldo Salazar did a great job controlling the middle, both on the offensive and defensivestagesofthegame,” head coach Jose Cortes commented.
