Kingston throttles Prague in 42-0 shutout

Senior Reid Patterson rumbled 46 yards for the opening touchdown just 2:21 into the game and Kingston was unfazed by a steady early rain and never looked back in a 42-0 whitewashing of Prague.

The Redskins also got rushing scores from Parks Ratzlaff and Hudson Everhart while building a 21-0 edge before Patterson connected with Logan Stephens for a 17-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second stanza.

“We practiced all week preparing for heavy rain and it didn’t end up as bad as we thought,” said head coach Brad Hill. “We weren’t fazed much offensively. We threw and caught it well and our rushing attack was really good. We put in a heavy package with Ethan Mowles in the event of sloppy conditions and he ended up rushing for a touchdown and throwing for another to Lander Burkhalter, who scored his first touchdown of the season.

“I was really proud of our defense. They played very physical, tackled well and swarmed to the football against a really good rushing team and pretty much shut them down all night.”

Kingston totaled 259 yards on the ground while averagingmorethan10yards per carry on the night.

Patterson led the charge with 83 yards on only three totes and was efficient throwing with six completions in seven tries for 90 yards. Ratzlaff rushed three times as well for 53 yards and Mowles added 36 yards on three carries. Boen Proctor tacked on two attempts for 33 yards and Kelly Gray rushed three times as well for 30. Mowlesalsohitontwopasses for 38 yards.

Ty Jones paced the receiving corps with three grabs for 34 yards.

The 7-1 Redskins return home at 7 p.m. Friday with the opportunity to wrap up the District 2A-3 championship and secure itself with not having to leave its home field again until the state semifinals, provided they continue winning.

Kingston will face off with an athletic Hugo club that will be fighting for its playoff life.

“We are going to get their best shot,” Hill added. “Hugo is talented and fast. They have a Division 1 receiver. They are very athletic and dangerous when they get the ball in space. They are fighting for a playoff spot so will be a dangerous team. It’s a big game with a chance to secure a district championship so our guys know what’s at stake.

“I expect a great crowd in a playoff-type atmosphere. We are excited for the challenge. It is important for us to be able to insure not having to play a true road playoff game.

The kids have worked hard to put us in this position. We just have to go out, take care of business and clinch it.”
