Sports Column

In case it hasn’t already been said, I want to let you in on a secret: I am a huge sports fan.

Be it the latest on the Major League Baseball trade deadline and what it means for my beloved New York Mets or which recruits are visiting Norman, there are times I can’t get enough.

So then why do I spend so much time watching ESPN’s Sportscenter or listening to talk radio?

I think it is part of our modern 24-hour news cycle. I frankly think this is some attempt to fill space, which truth be told, is rather hollow.

I decided to start a regular sports column, for a few reasons.

First, I believe there should be a space to talk about more than the box scores. Second, I want to call things like I see them, either when we as sports fans are witnessing history or something noteworthy happen.

Lastly, in both conversations with the public and completed surveys from our readers, there is an appetite in Marshall County for thoughtful commentary. This is something the editorial team at The Madill Record is ready to provide.

Ready to rant

That said, let’s dive into this week’s topic: the pure joy of amateur sports and why I’m taking a break from the National Football League in 2019.

Part of my move to Madill has been adjusting to a different sports talk station. These days, I’ve been listending to 103.3 ESPN Radio out of Dallas. While they do provide quality reporting and commentary, I have a limit to how much Dallas Cowboys talk I can handle.

I don’t care for the current contract standoff between star running back Ezekial Elliot and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. I won’t go into how much money Elliot wants or how much Jones is willing to spend.

Rather, I’m tired of the drama that always surrounds the NFL. Be it bad behavior off the field by both players and owners alike or people wanting more money, I’m sick of it all.

This fall, I’ll focus on college football and becoming immersed in all things Kingston and Madill sports. There is something special about young people playing cause they enjoy the game and are proud to represent their school’s colors. At least the optimist in me prefers that to those playing for their next paycheck.

Please join me and enjoysing sports for what the simple joy they are.
