Theory of a Deadman gearing up for Rocklahoma

Theory of a Deadman is a Canadian rock band from North Delta, British Columbia that formed in 1999. The band sometimes called Theory, has traces of country, post-grunge and alternative rock.

The group’s accolades include nine singles making it to the top ten of the US Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. Four of their songs, “Bad Girlfriend,” “Lowlife,” “Rx (Medicate) and “History of Violence” all peaked at number 1.

The band’s new album debuting on March 17 is “Dinosaur”. JohnDandeneauisthe current drummer for Theory and has been with the band for fifteen years. He said the new album is different from their past two albums.

Dandeneau said there is nocorrectwaytocomparethe new album to their previous two albums because they differ too much.

“I think it’s apples to oranges, “Dandeneau said. “The last two albums were very in-depth, lyrical-wise. You grow as a person, you change, and want to try new things.”

“Dinosaur” is a more lighthearted album, mirroring their works prior to “Say Nothing” and “Wake up call.” Dandeneau said the group wanted to make songs with a deeper meaning and “branch out musically.” According to Dandeneau, the gamble was worth it.

“Ultimately, we got arguably the biggest hit on “Wake up Call.” He was referring to “Rx (Medicate)”. Once the band branched out with the deeper albums, they discussed their next step as a group.

“We discussed our next album between ourselves, with the label, and read comments from our fans,” he said. “We took all that into consideration, and decided to go back to the fun, heavy stuff we love.”

He said “Dinosaur” is a combination of their origins and the new stuff. Even though the album is more light-hearted, the lyrics are taken from personal experiences.

Dandeneau said it is difficult to say if there will be more in-depth songs in the future because they just finished “Dinosaur,” and haven’t yet thought about new songs. He did say it is “very possible” because it is “in our wheelhouse.”

Rocklahomaisathree-day music festival held in Pryor, Okla. during the first weekend of September. Theory is slotted to be one of the acts for the 2023 event. Dandeneau said the group is “super excited” to attend this year.

“Rocklahoma is a blast every time we’ve done it,” he said. “It’s a blast, I’m always excited about it.”

He said he’s always enjoyed Rocklahoma because the venue crew and fans have always been so pleasant and helpful. The band plans to give Rocklahoma guests a taste of their new album while also playing some of the fans’ favorites.

“A little bit of everything for everyone,” Dandeneau said with a smile in his voice.
