Floating on an air mattress

A woman was found and rescued after floating on an air mattress in Lake Texoma for two days. On February 3, 2022, Train Conductor Cristhian Sosa and Train Engineer Justin Luster were on their regular train route from Madill, Okla. to Irving, Texas. However, their route that day was anything but typical.

The pair came across a woman who was flailing one arm and screaming for help holding an air mattress. The woman, who identified herself only as Connie, said she had been floating on Lake Texoma for two days in the freezing temperatures.

Luster said the story seemed a little too bizarre to be real.

“Well naturally, we kind of thought maybe she was delirious,” Luster said. “We really didn’t know what happened and it wasn’t until we got to the crossing where the highway patrolman had come out to find out here story was accurate. She had been floating on that air mattress for a solid day or two.”

Sosa said they found her near Sand Point.

“She was literally laying on the ground waving one arm, basically her left arm, the one that wasn’t stuck with her jacket, and she was asking for help,” Sosa said. “We instantly knew she was hurt, and she needed help.”

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said they received reports about her significant other knocking on doors, asking for help finding his wife. Apparently, their boat and belongings began drifting away from the dock. Connie hopped on the air mattress in an attempt to retrieve their boat.

Unfortunately, the current was too powerful and pulled her out into the lake. Sosa said she must have drifted a good distance.

“She mentioned some- thing about Ranger Station, I guess on the other side of the lake,” Sosa said. “I guess she has a boat and some of her stuff started drifting away and she tried to catch it and before she knew it, she was on top of her air mattress, and she was a drift and there was nothing she could do, and she could do, and she ended up by the rocks.”

A representative with OHP said she had hypothermia and some cuts and was taken to the hospital by Bryan County EMS. She is expected to survive.
