Late leads slip away for Madill in Tish tourney

After dropping a pair of district contests to powerful Community Christian, the Madill High School baseball team was on the brink of triumphs in the Tishomingo Tournamentbutwatchedtwo tight battles slip away in the final inning.

The first of those came against rival Tishomingo as the Wildcats suffered a narrow 10-9 defeat and the second was a 7-6 heartbreaker against Minco. Madill fell to Class B power Boswell, 14-2, in the tournament finale.

Madill raced to a 3-0 lead in the Tishomingo contest fueled by first frame RBI singles from Jagger Rogers and Abram Osornio.

Pitcher Cooper McHatton cruised with that advantage until the fourth when the Indians plated a run and was charged with another tally in the fifth before being relieved by Derwin Sanchez after 81 pitches. The Wildcat starting hurleryieldedthetworunson three hits, struck out five and walked four but didn’t figure in the pitching decision.

Tishomingopushedacross three in the fifth to take the lead and added four more in the sixth stanza to go in front 8-3, but the Wildcats were not done thanks to a final inning flurry.

Rogers opened with a single and two straight walks loaded the bases for Madill. Anthony Fuentes was hit by a pitch to force in one run and Cane Cook added an RBI on a walk.

A wild pitch tacked on a third run and Sanchez narrowed the gap to 8-7 with a run-scoring hit. Another errant toss tied the game and McHatton tallied an RBI single for the lead.

Madill managed two outs in the bottom of the seventh but back-to-back hit batters with the bases loaded tied and won the game for Tishomingo.

The Wildcats racked up a season-high 10 hits with Sanchez,RogersandDaquan Williams leading the charge with two apiece. McHatton, Osornio, Rankin Page and Cook all notched one hit.

Madill again worked out to a nice lead against Minco, taking a 5-0 cushion in the second stanza but was only able to plate one more tally over the final five innings. That opened the door for the Bulldogsastheyscoredsingle runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh along with three runs in the fifth.

Sanchez and McHatton each singled in the first leading to Madill’s initial score. Thompson started the four-run uprising in the second frame with a single and Layne Doher and Sanchez each contributed one-out hits. McHatton was hit by a pitch for an RBI and Rogers walked to force in another.

TheWildcatsfinishedwith a 12-9 edge in hits spurred by a big outing from Jayse Thompson, who contributed four hits and scored a run. Sanchez, Osornio and Page all pitched in two hits with one apiece from McHatton and Doher.

Offense was in short supply against Boswell as Madill only came up with one hit on a Tyner Roberts single.
