Redskins cruise into playoffs with Roland romp

Taking control from the start, Kingston scored touchdowns on all five first quarter possessions and never looked back for a dominant 55-0 romp over Roland on Senior Night last week.

The Redskins built the 55-point edge before intermission and then put it in cruise control over the final two stanzas while notching their third shutout of the season to finish a perfect 7-0 in Class 2A-1 District 3 action.

Coach Brad Hill’s squad begins the postseason Friday with another home tilt against 4-6 Sperry, who claimed fourth in District 4. It will be a rematch of last year’s playoff opener which Kingston won 41-6.

“We want to come out to make sure we were focused in and ready to go on Senior Night and did just that,” Hill commented. “We jumped out fast. Several kids played and contributed and most of the seniors had nice games. Our defensewasjustoutstanding. We didn’t just want to be district champs but wanted to be undefeated in district. It was a great job all the way around.

“We start a new season this week with the playoffs and Sperry returns a lot of kids off last year’s team that we played. They play in a tough district and are battletested. We are going to need to play well in front of a big crowd at home.”

Hudson Everhart’s dazzling 48-yard punt return set Kingston up with a short field for its opening possession and they quickly punched it into the end zone on a Logan Stephens 16-yard scoring burst.

The Redskins added to the advantage less than two minutes later when Reid Patterson found fellow senior Parks Ratzlaff on a 27-yard catch and run to paydirt.

Boen Proctor added a 61-yard touchdown jaunt immediately after Kingston got the ball back and Patterson contributed a 32-yard scoring run as well. Jaksyn Martin’s 16-yard touchdown with 50 seconds left continued the onslaught.

Hill’s defense got in on the scoring on the first play of the second stanza when Jesse ThomasinterceptedaRoland pass and returned it 26 yards for another touchdown and 41-0 cushion.

Kingston went for big play scores on its following two possessions, the first of which was a 77-yard scoring pass from Patterson to Ratzlaff.

Sophomore Kelly Gray bolted 93 yards for another score with 2:44 left in the first half.

The Redskin reserves played extensively in the final two periods as neither team could dent the scoreboard again.

Hill’s squad racked up a whopping 446 yards of total offense on only 28 plays from scrimmage with 305 of that coming on the ground.

Twelve different Redskins carried the ball with Gray accumulating the highest yardage total with 100 on just three carries. Proctor toted the ball twice for 80 yards and Patterson carried twice for 60. Senior Kayden Harjo also contributed 27 yards on a pair of rushes.

Parks Ratzlaff was the top receiver with a pair of catches, each going for touchdowns, and 104 yards.
