The MHS athlete of the week is Zeplyn Thomas, a remarkable senior who has made a significant impact at Madill Schools. From her early days in pre-K to her active involvement in various sports and organizations, her journey reflects her dedication, leadership and passion for life.
Thomas is the daughter of John and Courtney Thomas and has a younger sister, Emersyn. She said she cherishes her time spent with her family, including her grandparents, Ferrel and Ellen Stafford, Wayne and Janet Tuckwell, and the late Mike Thomas, who have all played an influential role in her life.
Having attended Madill Schools since pre-K, Thomas has built lasting memories and friendships. Her involvement in activities like softball, track and varsity cheerleading—where she serves as captain—highlights her commitment to not just her own success but also to uplifting her teammates.
After graduation, Thomas said she plans to pursue a college degree, with aspirations to study psychology or early childhood education.
Reflecting on her time in school, Zeplyn fondly recalled her junior year, sharing breakfast with her best friend, Bella Bishop, during their off hours. In sports, she reminisced about lighthearted moments, such as when her track relay team encountered a frog stuck in the baton.
She said her favorite moments in softball include the camaraderie shared in the dugout with teammates Brooklyn and Laila, and she values the unforgettable bus rides with her cheer squad, filled with laughter and bonding.
Thomas expressed heartfelt thanks to her coaches for pushing her to excel and encouraging her leadership.
“Thank you for always pushing me to be the best possible athlete and person that I could be,” she shared.
Her gratitude extends to her parents, who have been her unwavering supporters.
“I will forever thank y’all for not always telling me what I want to hear but what I need to hear.”
Thomas said she draws inspiration from several key figures in her life. Walter Bruce Bigger, her lifelong cheerleader, has taught her the importance of faith and perseverance.
In cheerleading, coaches Courtney Hodebeck and Kaylee Pruitt have instilled in her a drive to improve and maintain a positive outlook, while Dahlia Marris, her softball mentor, helped her learn the fundamentals of pitching and supported her through tough times.
In track, Thomas said she looks up to her mother, an accomplished runner, who motivates her to work hard andpushthroughchallenges.
