Lady Cats split four games in Wright City tourney

A pair of shutout victories in the Wright City Tournament wrapped up one of the best weeks of the season for the Madill fastpitch softball team.

The Lady Wildcats sandwiched a 17-0 romp over Hugo and 11-0 throttling of Idabel in the midst of losses to Smithville (9-2) and Atoka (13-1).

Madill has a pair of road tilts on the slate this week ahead of the regular season home finale Monday against Kingston.

Coach Shawn Runyan’s troops jumped out to the early advantage against Hugo and never looked back while cruising to the victory as they scored 10 runs in the first frame and seven in the second.

Karma Williams had the first key hit in the opening surge as she doubled to plate a pair following four straight free passes. Chloe Miller also contributed a two-run double as the Lady Wildcats capitalized on eight total free passes along with a couple of Hugo errors while sending 14 batters to the plate.

Hits were more plentiful in the second stanza with Emersyn Thomas, Zeplyn Thomas, Laila Pickens, Tillie ChapaandLannaWigington all notching singles. Zeplyn Thomas and Pickens each drove in a pair of runs.

Layne Albright went all three innings in the pitching circle for the run rule win, yielding two hits and striking out two.

Zeplyn Thomas tossed in a single as Pickens and Williams had RBI doubles for all the Lady Wildcat offense against Smithville, but they got things turned back around when they faced Idabel.

Batting as the home team, Madillpushedacrosssixruns in the first frame, four in the second and one more in the third.

Wigington drove in one of the first inning tallies with a single. Pickens added a double to ignite a flurry in thesecondwithWilliamsand Chapa also following with hits. Williams then singled and scored on Wigington’s sacrifice bunt for the final run in the third frame.

That was more than enough offensive support for Zeplyn Thomas in the pitching circle as she fired a fourinning no hitter, notching six strikeouts in the process.

Madill then couldn’t get much going in the loss to Atoka, which ended its run in the tournament.

Brooklyn Pruitt, Miller, Wigington and Albright each tallied one hit.
