Tulsa,Okla.— A l e xS a r abia of the Madill Takedown Club and recent graduate of Madill Middle School took thebronzemedalinFreestyle Wrestling at the 2025 USAOKW Freestyle/Greco State Championship in the Arvest Convention Center on May 24, 2025.
The bronze medal is Sarabia’s second medal in just two weeks related to qualifying for the 2025 USMC Junior Nationals, commonly referred toas“Fargo”.Fargoisa big deal in a youth wrestler’s career.
It’s the final competition of the season where qualifi ed youth wrestlers face off in North Dakota for 10 days in July.
Sarabia went to the USAOKW State Freestyle and Greco Championship just to sharpen his skills. He now will make Madill wrestling history by being the first wrestler and student from Madill Public Schools not only to qualify for Fargo, but actually go and represent Team Oklahoma with two other members of the Madill Takedown Club.
Wrestling up in the 16U 285-lb brackets, Sarabia’s first match was total domination, pinning his opponent in under one minute.
The best of the best in sportsmanship came when Sarabia wrestled his teammate and training partner, Lucas Franklin for a podium finish. Franklin eventually walked away as the State Champ in both Freestyle and Greco, as well as the Triple Crown Winner.
Sarabia, however, showed a maturity well beyond his years and walked away with that second Freestyle medal inasmanyweeks.Heispeaking at just the right moment as he prepares for Fargo.
The Madill Takedown Clubhasneverhadtwoteammates go head-to-head for the medal count, let alone in any competition.
The club’s coaches said they are impressed by how both wrestlers showed grace under fire, leadership and respect for each other before, during, and after.
Coach Peter Hammer summedupSarabia’ssuccess in these last two weeks and said he is so proud of Sarabia.
“Alex is really fun to work with,” Hammer said. “Here is a wonderfully-raised young man, super respectful, humble, kind… and he can pick me up and suplex me if he wants. Alex is the kind of wrestler that makes you race to the wrestling room to get down to brass tacks and help him reach his next goal.”
“His drive and focus in the face of getting knocked down has gotten him here,” Hammer continued.“Onehundred percent.”
To prepare for Fargo, the club continues to run their five-month long Freestyle & Greco practice, which ends on July 31, 2025.
