Madill girls 6th, boys 12th in MW Conference

Madill’s high school boys wrestlers claimed 12th place as a team while the girls took sixth in the 26-team Midwestern Conference Tournament last weekend at the Kerr Activity Center in Ada.

The Wildcats were led by junior Triston Gibson, who captured runner-up honors in the 120-pound division. He cruised to the finals with a 41-second fall victory, 17-2 technical fall and 7-0 and 7-1 decisions for four straight wins before dropping a technical fall verdict in the title tilt.

Fellow junior Braxton Gimenez was the Wildcats’ other high medalist at 113 pounds as he rebounded from an opening round defeat with four consecutive consolation round triumphs in placing third individually. He notched a 9-5 decision ahead of 1:31 and 2:03 fall wins and then prevailed by a 22-16 count in a wild third place matchup.

Colton Sandefur added a fifth-place effort at 126 pounds with Darian Perez also ending fifth at 113.

Madill’s girls meanwhile had three wrestlers take runner-up honors in the eventwithKaiaHenryat130 pounds, Madelyn Ritchie at 190 and Anglena Mendiola at 235.

Henry received a bye and then injury forfeit to reach the title match before a first period fall loss. Ritchie picked up a 5:12 fall triumph in the opener and then held on for a narrow 9-7 semifinal verdict ahead of a fall loss in the championship. Mendiola meanwhile drew a bye and then recorded the 3:40 pin fall win in the semifinals before the title match setback.

Morgan Walls finished third at 170 pounds, Madison Barrow checked in fourth at 235 with Andie Wallace wrapping up sixth in the 115-pound division.

In the packed 170-pound division, Walls earned a first round bye and then was a 5:12 fall victor ahead of a 19-3 technical fall loss in the semifinals. She answered by bouncing back with a 3:08 fall win for third place.

Barrow scored a pair of wins while finishing 2-2 in her bracket. She won the opener in just 45 seconds for a fall, dropped the second match but came back for a 1:35 pin fall triumph in consolation round action to eventually claim fourth.

In the junior high conference tournament, Madill was the tournament runner-up in boys with the girls taking home the third-place team award.

Canyon Phillips was the lone Madill individual champ whileBraydenValles,Yatziri Flores, Mekayla Westbrook and Brissa Reyes each ended as tournament runner-up. Third place honorees for MadillincludedLayneDorer, Alex Sarabia, Yadel Sanchez, Karmony Pearson and Maylin Narvaez.

They also picked up a fourth place by Samatha Ortiz, fifth from Victoria Robles and sixth place recipients were Teo Barrientos, Valaria Barrientos, Johanna Gonzalez and Bella Barrientos.

The Wildcats are slated to be back in tournament action at Ardmore this weekend.
