It was an extremely busy opening week of action for the Madill wrestling teams as both the girls and boys units split dual competitions in Frisco, Texas last weekend withsevenindividualtournament placers.
Those performances came after the junior high blasted Lone Grove, 66-18, in its season-opening dual while the high school boys’ group fell 45-36 to the Longhorns. TheLadyWildcatswonseven of the eight matches that took place in the girls’ division.
Winners for the Madill boys high school group in the season lid lifter were Saul Martinez, Braxton Gimenez, Coltyn McQueary, Triston Barnes, Tyner Roberts and Xavier Diaz. Lady Wildcat victors included Samantha Ortiz, Brissa Reyes, Kaia Henry, Yatziri Flores, Madison Barrow and Anglena Mendiola.
The junior high had a plethora of match winners in Teo Barrientos, Ranger Willis, Donavan Sinks, Canyon Phillips, Layne Dorer, Yadel Sanchez, Josue Sanchez, Moises Bautista, Rodrigo Cruces, Enrique Martinez and Alex Sarabia.
In dual action at Frisco, the Wildcats notched a pair wins in four outings with the girls winning one of two against the Texas opponents.
Leading the charge in the individual tournament at Frisco as well on the girls’ side was Mendiola, who cruised to the title at 235 pounds. She drew a bye in round one before first period fall verdict in 1:50 of the semifinal match. She then actually met teammate Madison Barrow in the title matchup, posting another verdict by fall in 2:31.
Barrowwasasecondplace finisher as she also picked up an opening round bye and then needed only 81 seconds for first period pin fall in the semifinals.
ThreeotherLadyWildcats all recorded fourth place showings in the early season tournament, including Karmony Pearson, Allie Barthel and Madison Ritchie.
Pearson went 2-2 in matches at 114 pounds, winning her opening bout with a 2:21 fall decision. A semifi nal loss dropped her to the consolation bracket where she scored an impressive 22-2 technical fall victory. In the third-place match she dropped a fall verdict.
Wrestling at 100 pounds, Barthel received a pair of byescoupledwitha47-second fall loss in the tournament semifinals and 18-1 decision in the third place match.
Ritchie grabbed a bye in the quarterfinals at 185 pounds ahead of a 5-0 decision defeat in the semifinals. She rebounded by scoring a 2:14 fall win in the consolation bracket ahead of a third place 1:41 pin loss.
TristonBarneswasthetop Wildcat finisher in the tough field as he placed second at 120 pounds. Following a bye, he tallied back-to-back 13-0 major decisions through the quarterfinals and semifinals to reach the title tilt. Barnes dropped a narrow 7-4 verdict in that finale against an undefeated Texasgrapplerfrom Southlake Carroll.
Madill’s other individual placer came at 126 pounds with Colton Sandefur ending up fifth.
He was a 2:15 fall victor in his opening match before falling in the quarterfinals on a 17-2 technical fall.
Sandefur rebounded with consecutive wins in the consolation bracket, taking the first in a 1:40 fall and needed only 86 seconds for the second fall triumph. He then lost a 2:24 fall in the fifth place matchup.
The Wildcat teams will be backontheroadThursdayfor dual action Thursday at Plainview, also joined by Davis.
