Yard of the Month

The Madill Rose Garden Club selected Vicky Minter’s residence on Briarwood Drive as August’s Yard of the Month.

Minter said she has lived on the north side of Madill for two years and loves everything about gardening.

“I love growing flowers and vegetables,” she said. “Plants enhance every inch of my yard, front and back.”

She said her trees are a “huge advantage in the choice of flowers.” The shade is crucial to keep the plants beautiful during the excessive heat.

She has perennials and annuals in flower beds and containers in her yard. Caladiums and the neon blossoms on impatients add “a bit of delicate interest near larger plants.” There are solar lights with different colors placed around the yard and flowers.

She said her goal is to “mix different colors of blooms with a variety of shades of green plants to create an attractive color palette” for her yard. She has a mixture of exotic and more traditional plants with varying colors, textures and heights. The elephant ears, ferns, tropical and hardy hibiscus helps create the exotic look.

Minter has several banana trees in her backyard, along with a fig tree, an Oakleaf hydrangea, a lemon tree, lime tree, plumeria and containers with vegetables and roses. One plumeria bloomed.

This past spring, she planted Knock Out and Drift roses in the backyard since that’s the part of the yard that receives the most sunlight.

She said that everybody should try gardening.

“Gardening is a lot of work, but it is very rewarding,” she said. “I encourage everyone to give it a try, even if it is just one container. Soon, you’ll be adding another one.”
