From Tavern to Titans: The U.S. Marine Corps Marks 250 Years of Valor

This week, the United States Marine Corps celebrates its 250th birthday, a milestone that traces its origins back to a Philadelphia tavern and a promise forged through fire and history never to be broken again.

On November 10, 1775, in the midst of the American Revolution, the Continental Congress authorized the formation of two battalions of Marines. Recruitment began that very day at Tun Tavern, a popular meeting place in Philadelphia, where Captain Samuel Nicholas, now remembered as the first Commandant of the Marine Corps, began enlisting men to serve at sea and on shore.

These early Marines were trained to fight aboard naval vessels and in amphibious assaults, giving rise to the Marine Corps’ enduring reputation as the first to fight. The Corps’ early years weremarkedbybothtriumph and turbulence.

After the Revolutionary War, in 1783, the Continental Marines were disbanded along with much of the fledgling nation’s military. Yet the spirit of the Marines did not fade.

Recognizing their vital role, Congress formally reestablished the United States Marine Corps on July 11, 1798. From that moment forward, the Marines’ existence was secured by an unspoken vow that the Corps would never again be dissolved, a promise that has endured through every battle and generation since.

From the shores of Tripoli tothesandsofIwoJima, from the jungles of Vietnam to the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan, Marines have carried their legacy of courage, discipline andunwaveringloyalty acrosstheworld.Theirmotto, “Semper Fidelis” - “Always Faithful” - continues to embody the devotion that binds every Marine to one another and to their country.

Today, as Marines across the globe gather to celebrate the 250th birthday, the traditional cake-cutting ceremony will again honor that unbroken lineage. The oldest Marine present will hand a slice of cake to the youngest, symbolizing the passing of history, values and duty from one generation to the next.

From a humble tavern meeting to a force recognized worldwide for its strength and honor, the Marine Corps stands as a testament to endurance, sacrifice and the enduring promise made centuries ago: that the Marines would never be disbanded again. Semper Fi, and happy 250th birthday to the United States Marine Corps.
