Love county man arrested after hostage situation

A Love County man is behind bars after a stand off and hostage situation. At approximately 9:30 p.m. on February 17, the Love County Sheriffs Department received a call about a shooting. The reporting party said a man was shot in the chest and the suspected shooter took a two-year-old child hostage and barricaded himself in the home.

Once responders arrived on scene, they learned that the gun shot victim was first taken by vehicle to Wilson, then was flown to a larger hospital. Law officials and negotiators with the Love County Fugitive Apprehension Unit established a line of communication with the suspect.

After a lengthy negotiation, the suspect agreed to release the child to law enforcement. Once the child was out of harm’s way, negotiators began speaking with the suspect to talk him into exiting the residence and away from the firearm.

Afteranextendedperiodof time, law officials were able to successfully talk the suspect into surrendering and take him into custody without any further incidents.

Officials said that the investigation is ongoing, so there aren’t many details as to who the suspect was and why shots were fired.

The LCSO said they were thankful for all of the agencies who responded and assisted in the chaotic scene.
