Students from Kingston High School got a firsthand look at state government Thursday as they toured the Capitol and met with their local lawmaker, Josh Cantrell, during a visit organized throughFamily,Career and Community Leaders of America.
The group made the trip to the Oklahoma State Capitol on Feb. 19, 2026, as part of FCCLA Day at the Capitol, an annual event that gives students the opportunity to observe the legislative process and speak directly with elected officials. Cantrell welcomed the Kingston students to his office, where he discussed the role of a state representative, how bills move through committees and onto the House floor and the importance of civic involvement.
He also answered questions about current legislative priorities and encouraged studentstostayengaged in issues affecting their communities.
“It’s important for young people to understand how the state government works and to know their voices matter,” Cantrell told the group during their visit.
Students said the opportunity to sit in the House gallery and watch proceedings in person helped bring classroom lessons to life. Several expressed interest in public service after hearing firsthand about the responsibilities and challenges of serving at the Capitol.
The FCCLA organization focuses on leadership development, career preparation andcommunityinvolvement, and advisers said the Capitol visit aligns with its mission to prepare students for roles as community leaders. For many of the Kingston students, Thursday’s trip marked their first time inside the Capitol building.
Teachers and chaperones said the experience not only broadened students’ understanding of state government but also reinforced the importance of staying informed and active as citizens.
