SAVANNA, Okla. – The Choctaw Nation has started off the new year by opening two housing additions in Savanna. A ceremony Monday, Jan. 13 created neighborhoods of 10 Affordable Rental homes and 10 Independent Elder Living homes in the Pittsburg County town.

The ceremony was held on Adams Street, site of the rental homes. The Independent Elder Living homes are located across the highway.

Chief Gary Batton stated how rainy weather that morning “reminds us of how important it is to have a warm home and a roof over our heads.” He cited figures noting that the opening in Savanna completed 70 out of 150 rental units committed to being built across southeast Oklahoma by the end of 2020.

The Choctaw Nation Housing Authority has assisted nearly 5,000 families through its various programs.

Each of the 10 Affordable Rental homes is 1,238 square feet and all-electric. All have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and include new electric appliances, granite countertops, and stained concrete flooring.

The square footage of each Independent Elder Living home is approximately 830. All are one bedroom and a bath and come equipped with appliances, including washers and dryers. All have stained concrete floors and indoor safe rooms.

Choctaw Tribal Councilman for District 12 James Frazier, where the Affordable Rental homes are located, and Choctaw Tribal Councilman for District 11 Robert Karr, site of the Independent Elder Living homes, both spoke, thanking all involved in the projects.
