Cantrell: Police week; graduation

Last week, I had the opportunity to recognize the Turner Girls Golf and Softball Championship on the House f loor. Both teams did a great job on a very successful year.

This week, the House adopted House Resolution1050 to recognize May 12 through May 18, 2024, as National Police Week and May 15, 2024, as Peace Officers Memorial Day in Oklahoma. Big thankyoutoallthelawenforcement officers in House District 49 and across the state of Oklahoma.

For some backstory, in 1963, President Kennedy issued the first proclamation for Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week to remember and honor law enforcement officers for their serviceandsacrifices.PeaceOfficers Memorial Day, which annually falls on May 15, honors law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.

During the past year, 136 officers nationwide have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty, including Captain John Robert Randolph III oftheRinglingPoliceDepartmentin Oklahoma. With House Resolution 1050, the House honored these brave individuals and extended its deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of these fallen officers.

This week, we’re showing our respect and support for law enforcement, survivors, andcitizens. Our police play an important role in keeping our communities safe, responding to emergencies, and maintaining public order. Every day, they put their lives on the line to protect others. I am proud to publicly stand up and say I back the blue.
