Youth-laden Madill offense improves in loss

Offensive success was much more noticeable for the Madill Wildcats last week even though they came out on the short end of a 54-20 gridiron decision against Dickson.

The Wildcats tallied 233 total yards, including 146 on theground, whilecashingina pair of offensive touchdowns but were hampered by five turnovers.

“We had much more success than the first two weeks,” head coach Wade Couch stated. “The attitude and effort were great. We’ve been working hard on the offensive side of the ball and it was nice to see the rewards. It was a good night.”

After falling behind 27-0 in the second period, the Wildcats finally hit paydirt when Christian Smith connected with his brother Justin for a 25-yard touchdown pass.

Just before intermission, Madill tacked on another score to trim the deficit to 33-12 as Steven Moreno intercepted a Dickson pass and returned it for a touchdown.

Landon Clutter bolted in for a two-yard scoring blast late in the fourth stanza and Christian Smith added the two-point conversion run for the Wildcats’ final points of the evening.

“I was impressed with our preparation and work on our blocking,” Couch said. “The kids were consistent. We put Christian (Smith) back in the shotgun and that helped. Our offensive line did an impressive job most of the night. Ramiro Rangel was back at center and played magnificently. Abrahm Osorio played extremely well, and two or three other linemen did a good job as well. We struggled a little defensively. We had a lot of guys in position but just didn’t make plays when we had opportunities.”

In addition to his 87 yards passing on five completions, Christian Smith was also the team’s leading rusher in the game with 65 yards on 21 carries. Cutter chipped in 17 rushes for 58 yards.

The Wildcats will have a week off before beginning the rugged District 4A-2 slate on the road at Tecumseh.

It’s going to be a good two weeks of preparation time. We will also do a lot of fundamentals and special teams this week to get ready
