Wildcats beat Kingston in nail biting game

The Madill Wildcats traveled to Kingston to play the Redskins on Friday, October 29, 2021. The Wildcats won the toss and chose to receive. With Kingston kicking off, Junior Stephen Sisco (60 receiving yards; 91 punting yards; 8 kick return yards) made the fair catch giving a first and ten from the 30-yard line.

Senior Kendall Robertson (179 passing yards; 163 rushing yards) was the˙ quarterback handing off to Sophomore Rey Gomez (73 rushing yards; 63 receiving yards) for second and nine. Robertson faked a handoff and gained a couple of yards. Freshman Uziel Flores attempted a catch from Robertson but was unable to hang on to the ball.

Sisco punted and the ball was blown out of bounds at the 32-yard line. The Redskins threw an incomplete pass for second and ten. The Redskins handoff and ran right but was swarmed by a pack of Wildcats. Kingston threw a pass where Rey was there to break it up.

Sisco was in the back field to receive Kingston’s punt for a first and ten on the 45- yard line. Robertson threw a complete pass to Sisco with a holding penalty called on the Wildcats, bringing a first and twenty-two.

Robertson handed off to junior River Shaw (16 rushing yards: 37 receiving yards) for a gain of one yard. Robertson and Sisco connected again for five yards gained for third and seventeen. Sisco battled for the catch from Robertson but was unable to connect.

Sisco punted where the ball was blown dead at the thirty-five-yard line. The Redskins carried the ball for a two-yard gain. Kingston tried to run but got nowhere with the Wildcat defense making the stop.

Kingston threw a complete pass with River and junior Josh Schneider on the stop. Kingston was forced to punt where the Wildcats take over on the 13-yard line.

Robertson kept the ball and gained eight yards for second and two from the 21- yard line. Robertson handed off to Rey but was unable to gain any yards.

River took the snap, and the Wildcat offense pushed their way to a first down, gaining four yards for a first and ten.

“River did a great job on the sneaks,” said Madill Head Coach Chad Speer.

Rey got the handoff from Robertson and ran to the left defeating Kingston’s defense to gain 22 yards being stopped near the 50- yard line. Rey took another handoff from Robertson and was able to get the first down in Kingston terrain.

Robertson kept the ball and ran to the right, gaining eight yards, but the Wildcats werre called for a ten-yard penalty, pushing them back to the 42-yard line. Rey took the handoff from Robertson and ran to the left where he got the first and ten from the 30-yard line.

Robertson threw to senior Nick Northcutt (19 receiving yards) but was unable to catch the pass. The Wildcats got another eight yards. Rey took another handoff from Robertson for another first and ten from the 14-yard line. Robertson faked the handoff to sophomore Reagan Combs for a Wildcat touchdown.

Senior Jimena Guevara’s extra point was good. The Wildcats took the lead with 1:25 left in the first quarter, 7 to 0. Guevara kicked to the Redskins where a fair catch was made for a first and ten from the 34-yard line. The Redskins ran up the middle where Shaw was there to make an immediate tackle. Kingston fumbled, was able to recover but no yards gained. The Wildcats were called for offside ending the first quarter.

Kingston started the second quarter with a first and ten being stopped quickly by senior Tito Gomez. The Redskins were inside the goal line for first and goal at the 7-yard line. Kingston was able to gain a few yards for 2 and 3.

Kingston tried to run but was wrapped up by Schneider for 3 and goal at the 4-yard line. The Redskins were unable to make the complete pass, making fourth and goal. The Redskins went for it where Tito was there to make the stop, Wildcats take over on downs.

Madill had a first and ten where Robertson kept the ball for 11 yards gained. Robertson handed off to Rey where he was able to gain 10 yards for another first down.

Rey took another handoff and ran to the right and was able to gain four yards. Robertson kept the ball and ran 66 yards for another Wildcat touchdown. Guevara’s extra point was good.

The Wildcats led 14 to 0 with 8:05 left in the first half. Guevara kicked to the Kingston for a fair catch at the 35-yard line being stopped by senior Cornelius Smith and Guevara.

Kingston threw the ball for an incomplete pass, but Rey was called for pass interference, a 15-yard penalty. Kingston ran the ball with junior Samy Trevino making the tackle. The Redskins ran left for a gain of six yards to make three and four. Kingston ran it 13 yards for a touchdown with the extra point good. Wildcats still led 14 to 7 with 6:26 left in the quarter.

The Redskins kicked to the Wildcats where freshman Eli Vinson (5 kick return yards) makes a fair catch for first and ten on the 31-yard line. Robertson handed off to Rey for a 3-yard gain. Rey took another handoff where he was slammed down to make third and five.

Sisco and Robertson were unable to connect on the pass. Sisco punted for a Redskin first and ten from the 38-yard line. Kingston handed off and ran up the middle pushing through the Wildcat defense for a first down.

The Redskins ran the right for another first and ten with freshman Leo Martinez (5 kick return yards) making the tackle. Kingston handed off but was immediately met by Tito, Shaw, Schneider, and Senior Danny Lima. Kingston gained five yards and ran out of bounds to bring third and four from the 23-yard line.

The next play brought a Redskin touchdown with the extra point blocked by the Wildcats. With 2:58 to go, Madill led 14 to 13.

Kingston kicked to the Wildcats with Leo on the return. Rey took the handoff from Robertson for 14 yards gained, making it first and ten from the 41. Robertson kept the ball and ran up the middle to gain five yards.

Shaw and Robertson connected to make a complete pass for a first down. Robertson ran to the right for second and one. Robertson threw a complete pass to Northcutt for a first down from the 33-yard line. Robertson ran left and pushed out of bounds with 21 seconds left. Robertson made a complete pass to Sisco.

Robertson threw to sophomore Caden McHatton for first and goal on the 9-yard line. Robertson ran right but threw back on a screen to Shaw for a Madill touchdown with Guevara making the extra point. Wildcats increased their lead at halftime, 21 to 13.

Guevara started the third quarter kicking off to the Redskins. Kingston made a fair catch and immediately were knocked out of bounds by Tito for a first and ten at the 48-yard line. The Redskins ran through several tackle attempts by the Wildcats for a gain of 24 yards.

Kingston tried to run on the next play, but Shaw does a spin tackle for no yards gained. Schneider makes a tackle for a loss of 2 yards for third and twelve. A complete pass was made for a first and goal. The Redskins score on the next play and get a twopoint conversion. Tied ball game at 21 a piece.

Kingston kicked to the Wildcats where the football bounced around with the Redskins recovering. Kingston ran right with Tito there to make the tackle. The Redskins tried to run up the middle but was met by Schneider and Lima. Kingston swept left with Smith on the stop. The next Kingston snap was a touchdown with the extra point good. Kingston led for the first time in the game 28 to 21 with 8:07 left in the quarter.

The Wildcats made a fair catch from the kick for a first and ten from the 25-yard line. Robertson handed off to Rey for a gain of two yards. Rey took the handoff from Robertson and got a first and ten. Speer said, “Rey ran the ball well.”

Robertson ran up the middle for second and four. Robertson kept the ball for a first and ten at the 49-yard line.

“Kendall made play after play,” said Speer.

Robertson and Sisco connected for a complete pass gain of 15 yards for another first and ten. Robertson handed off to Rey for a few yards gained. Northcutt caught a complete pass from Robertson. Shaw took the snap and pushed his way to a first down.

“The offensive line has really come into their own the last couple of weeks,” Speer said. “Very proud of them.”

Robertson threw left to find Northcutt for five yards gained. Sisco was unable to make the catch from Robertson making it third and four from the 17-yard line.

Robertson faked a handoff to Combs and ran to the end zone. Touchdown Wildcats. Guevara kicked the extra point to tie the game 28 to 28.

Trevino kicked to the Redskins for a first and ten at the 7-yard line. Kingston got a big run for a first down at the 30-yard line being stopped by Tito and Trevino. The Redskins gain three yards on the next drive with Rey there to make the tackle.

Kingston ran up the middle for a first down being tackled by senior Jorge Martinez and Shaw. The Redskins tried again to run up the middle again, but Schneider makes an immediate tackle. “Defensively we played hard and got some stops when we needed them,” said Speer.

Kingston gained three yards where Schneider made the tackle. Kingston was called for a holding ten-yard penalty where it is third and long to end the quarter.

Kingston got a first down to start the last quarter of the game. The Redskins ran up the middle with Schneider and Shaw on the stop. Kingston ran to the left where Trevino made the stop bringing a third and one.

Kingston made it first and goal on the three with 9:55 to go. Kingston swept to the right for a second and goal on the one-yard line. The Redskins scored with the extra point, taking the lead 35 to 28. Wildcats covered the loose ball from the Kingston kick for a first and ten in Kingston’s 13-yard territory. Rey took the handoff from Robertson and was only able to gain one yard.

Robertson threw an incomplete pass to Smith. Robertson made a complete pass to Rey past the 30-yard line, but Rey fumbled the ball with Kingston recovering for a first and ten.

The Redskins tried to run up the middle but only gained two yards. Sophomore Zeke Rodriguez made the tackle for a loss of yardage for the Redskins. Kingston’s quarterback rolled right, then rolled left where Shaw was there to make the quarterback sack.

The Redskins punted with Sisco sliding to make the catch for a first and ten. Robertson handed off to Rey and was tackled in the back field. Wildcats were called for a fifteen-yard penalty, making it first and 25.

Kingston called a time out. Robertson threw a complete pass to Sisco to the 45-yard line for a first down. Rey took the handoff and got nowhere. Robertson kept the ball and gained a couple of yards for third and eight from the 47- yard line.

The Redskins were called for a five-yard offside penalty. Time out Wildcats. Shaw took the snap and lobbed the football to Robertson for a first down.

“River executed the toss just how he needed to and he also had a couple of bit catches.,” said Speer. Incomplete pass from Robertson to Rey. Robertson faked a handoff and gained a few yards taking the Wildcats to a third and one with 3:15 left in the game.

Wildcats received two penalties in a row, first one for illegal substitution and a false start. Robertson threw to Shaw where he reached and grabbed for a first and ten on the 11-yard line with 2:44 to go. Robertson gained one yard. Robertson threw a complete pass to Sisco for a 4-yard gain. Robertson kept the ball and stretched to get a touchdown. The Wildcats go for a 2-point conversion with Robertson rolling to the right and find Sisco for the catch. Madill took the lead 36 to 35.

Wildcats kicked to Kingston and was blown out of bounds at the 12-yard line. The Redskins threw and tried to run but Rey made the tackle.

Kingston made the catch with junior Adan Yanez making the tackle. Kingston threw a long incomplete pass for the last play of the game. Wildcats won in a nail biter, 36 to 35.

“Great game. Our kids kept fighting and battling all night,” said Speer. “That was what I’m most proud of. They stayed together and competed.”

Madill will host Little Axe at 7:00 p.m. on November 5 for the final game of the season.

“Super proud of our players and coaches,” Speer stated. “Have a chance next week to end the year with a winning record and send our seniors out with a win.”
