The Redskins took on #14 in Class 2A Talihina in the semifinal round of the New Years Classic Jan. 10 at the KMAC.

The last game of the night turned out to be a good one. Coach Taylor Weibner’s squad came ready to play.

Although the score remained close, the Redskins never trailed and prevailed with a 44 to 38 win.

In the first quarter, Talhina had plans of establishing their highly touted 6’8”center. Coach Webner used a tag team approach and kept him in check for most of the game.

The defensive plan had Jesse Rose, Marshall Ludrick and later Drew Capps. The plan worked and he was held to one field goal.

Often, the rebounds were falling to Jase Hayes and Brady Brister.

Kaden Johnson provided the offense early on and was 2 of 2 from the line. Advantage Redskins, 12 to 6 after one quarter.

Physical play was the theme for the night. The second was no different.

Despite the Redskins best effort, the Talahina big man connected for 2 field goals and two free throws. Meanwhile Brister was just getting started.

After not scoring in the first, he was good for a field goal and a three in the quarter. Weibner had another field goal and Rose added a free throw. Talahina managed a 13 point effort but trailed 23 to 19 at the half.

Third quarter featured Brister on offense and the inside toughness of Rose, Ludrick and Capps. Though giving up several inches inside the big man from Talahina was held scoreless.

Brister hits again from long range and added two more field goals. Hayes added two field goals but had to take some bench time due to foul trouble. Johnson continued his steady play despite the best efforts of the defense who were full court pressing. He added a field goal. After three quarters, Redskins holding a five pont lead, 34 to 29.

In the fourth quarter Brister continued to hit big buckets when his team needed them. He hit another three and added a field goal.

He was also 2 of 2 from the free throw line. Hayes came back in to hit 2 free throws but fouled out with 1:10 to play. Johnson was 2 of 3 from the line.

But what about the Talahina big man you ask? He managed one field goal and a free throw. Redskins held him to 11 total points. They could manage only 8 points for the quarter. Redskins take this one, 44 to 38.

After the game Coach Weibner admitted he was surprised at the lack of success Talahina had inside. “Last night he was a different player, really had a good game” Weibner stated.

Final stats: Brister lead all scorers with 20 points, Hayes despite fouling out had 10. Johnson had a very nice game and finished with 9 points followed by Weibner with 6 and Rose with 1. Kudos to Ludrick and Capps who despite not scoring played valuable minutes against a much taller opponent.

The Redskins move on to face the 11 and 1, #2 in Class 2A, Dale Pirates.
