On Jan. 14, the Redskins played the Byng Pirates in a nail biting, intense shootout.

The Redskins, still thinking about the NYC finals and what could have been, took on the Byng Pirates.

This was a close, physical game. The score at each quarter gave a clue as to how close it was. Up by two, down by one, down by one again and finally up by five. Yes, the Redskins prevailed and closed this one out.

Coach Weibner was complimentary of the team from Byng. “This was a good win,” he said after the game. “They are a good team” he noted, “we had a few times where we broke down and allowed a open layup or an open shot.” When reminded that he had held his opponent to 37 points, he grinned and admitted “that’s pretty good”.

In the first quarter, Kaden Johnson, who has been shooting so well lately, came out with the three ball and had two for the quarter.

Dakota “Microwave” Weibner had a three as well. Jase Hayes scored four points and the Redskins trailed by one.

During the second quarter, both teams played well on defense.

Johnson -once again - managed five more points off a three and a field goal. Brady Brister added field goal and the deficit was again one, Redskins trail 22 to 21 at the half.

The third quarter was a “dead heat.” Brister and Jesse Rose scored the only Redskins baskets, while allowing the Byng Pirates only four themselves. Redskins still trailed 26 to 25.

Determined not to let this one get away, Hayes did most of the damage scoring wise. He had a three and two field goals and two free throws.

As the pressure ramped up, Brister came through with a steal and a bucket at the 2:50 mark.

This pulled the Redskins back to within one point. He followed that up by forcing a turnover with 1:36 left. Hayes scored again and put the Redskins ahead for good, 38 to 37. Redskins held on to win, 42 to 37.

Final stats: Johnson with 16 followed by Hayes with 13. Brister had 8 and Weibner added 3. Rose had 2 and did his best work on the boards and blocking out often leading the way for his team mates to rebound.

Redskins off now until Friday night when they take on the Madill Wildcats at Madill. This should be a good one. The Wildcats took them to overtime before falling to the Redskins.
