The 2020 New Year’s Classic tips off on Thursday, Jan.

9. The annual showcase features a very competitive field for both the boys’ and girls’ brackets. Each year, the competition has grown and 2020 lineups will be no different.

The tournament begins when the number three in Class 2A girls from Dale and the girls from Rock Creek compete for the ball. Dale is the returning NYC champion and off to a 6 and 3 record. They are perennial favorites in the Class 2A State championship each year.

This will be a tall order for Rock Creek, but they will gain valuable experience going into the playoff season. Game starts at 11:00 a.m.

The Dale and Rock Creek boys are up next. Dale is currently 8 and 1 and ranked number two in Class 2A. Rock Creek boys are coming off a terrific NYC tournament showing from 2019. The game starts at 12:20 p.m.

The 3:00 p.m. game features the Talahina and Latta boys. This should be a great matchup. Talahina is currently ranked number 9 nine in Class 2A is 4 and 2 on the season. Latta is always well coached and always play hard.

The Silo Lady Rebels and The Lady Wampus Cats of Atoka are up next at 4:20 p.m. The Silo girls are off to one of their best starts in years. Currently, pollsters have them at number five in Class 2A, after a blistering 9-0 start. Atoka girls are currently unranked.

At the 5:40 p.m. matchup, it will be a boys’ contest between Howe and Atoka. Howe is the favorite here boasting a 12-0 start to the season and a number four Class 2A ranking. It should be an exciting one.

The evening session starts at 7:00 p.m., featuring the crowd favorite Lady Redskins of Kingston and the ladies from Latta. The KHS girls are, at press time, 3 and 5 and ranked number 13 in Class 3A. They are without their junior forward Avri Weeks who’s status – at press time – is unknown. The Latta girls are having a nice season at 8 and 2 and a number 6 ranking in Class 2A.

The opening night finale will have the Redskins matched with the Silo Rebels. The Redskins are the defending NYC champions and the defending Class 3A state champions. Currently ranked 19th in Class 3A, they are learning to win again despite losing three starters to the college ranks. They are young and it will be a tough tourney for them to repeat.

How to see the NYC: Call the high school office and get a tournament pass. Also ask about the pass that gives you access to the food court. It is fine dining and just steps away from the court. Last year, the menu varied from catfish to Italian and Mexican. All served buffet style and is the best in the state. Enjoy the 2020 NYC and go Redskins.
