MC schools excel in cross country meets

Last week, the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams from Madill and Kingston competed in pre state meets. The Tuesday, September 19 meet in Sulphur hosted athletes from across the state to compete.

With multiple races consisting of more than 100 runners,thefieldwaspacked. The event kicked off with the boys’ varsity 5K run with Madill sophomore Jose Campos placing 7th. Following up in the 8th, 9th and 10th spots were teammates James Valadez, Benjamin Hernandez, and Triston Barnes.

In the varsity girls 2MI run, Barbosa, a Madill sophomore, placed 1st and fellow classmate Onelia Stumblingbear came in 9th.

The middle school events were just as exciting with a tight race in the boys 2 MI run with 7th grader Jayden Barbosa coming in 2nd and fellow Madill teammates Kamden Martin, Alex Gonzalez, and Dylan Serrano placing in 6th, 7th, and 8th.

The girls 1.33-yard dash wasatoughbattleforMadill’s Lexington Willis taking 4th and Kingston’s Rylee Davis placing 7th out of 141 other athletes.

Then on Saturday, September 23, the pre-state cross country meet was at Edmond Santa Fe High School. This event was an even tighter field of competition with only 24 schools in the race.

In the overall team results, Madill placed 6th out of 19. Teammates Barbosa, Stumblingbear, Korlee Cunningham-Martin, Kaia Henry, Katelyn Acquaviva, Esperanza Hernandez, and Yailin Serrano held their own in the 4A division competing up against schools like Kingfisher High School who placed 1st in the team overall results.

Impressively, despite Madill placing 6th, Barbosa was able to clinch the 4th-place spot in the individual overall position.
