The Madill Cross Country teams traveled to Marietta to run in the Red River Showdown on Saturday, August 28, 2021. The high school boys ran 3.1 miles and placed fifth overall as a team. Senior Anthony Sanchez placed fourth with a time of 17:28.38. Head Coach Cale Eidson said Sanchez did well. “Anthony ran a good race but was outpaced at the end.”

Finishing in fifteenth place was Jayden McCain with a 19:08.11 time. Other high school runners included: sophomore Amando Gonzalez (20:16.14); freshman James Valadez (20:20.36); sophomore Jared Gallegos (20:46.84); junior Saulo Castro (21:15.68); freshman Kye Salazar (22:57.77); freshman Jesus Barrientos (23:33.12); junior Cesar More no (23:35.05); sophomore David Mendez (25:46.74); sophomore Jesus Gonzalez (27:59.17); and sophomore Barrick Idell (29:12.23). Eidson said there is still much work to do.

“The boys have a lot of work to do in terms of preparation and determination,” said Eidson.

The high school girls placed third overall, running two miles. Senior Isabel Sanchez placed second running a 12:36.17. Placing fifteenth was senior Joslyn Stumblingbear with a time of 14:10.16.

Eidson said, “Isabel ran a solid race, but didn’t manage to hold on for the individual win.” Other girl runners included: freshman Maritsa Aldaba (14:29.35); sophomore Korlee Cunningham-Martin (14:46.09); sophomore Ariana Espinoza (14:50.89); senior Nathali Ibarra (15:14.81); senior Jaslyn Grimaldo (15:33.07); senior Carol Moreno (15:38.10); sophomore Yailin Serrano (16:23.77); junior Tarah Wiese (17:43.10); and freshman Liliana Santillan (21:33.62). Eidson said the girls need more experience as running as a unit.

“The girls need to work on running together better throughout the race,” said Eidson.

The junior high boys ran two miles and placed second overall as a team. Ryder Douglas placed in eighth place (13:24.63); Jose Campos placed eleventh (13:38.12); Cash Cooper placed fourteenth (13:48.79); and Jagger Rogers placed fifteenth (13:49.29). Other runners included: Triston Barnes; Flavio Ibarra; Cooper McHatton and Gael Gallegos.

“The junior high boys ran well as a team,” said Eidson.

The junior high girls placed fifth overall running one and a half miles Allyson Webb won the race with a 9:14.95 time. Placing third was Yadira Barbosa (10:04.91). Other runners were: Hadon Stuckey; Brailea Page: Camila Guevara; Dalota Peters.

“Allyson Webb and Yadira Barbosa ran really well for the junior high girls,” Eidson said.

Eidson said he was pleased with the number of runners that they had for the meet.

“We had about forty elementary kids come to run at Marietta,” said Eidson. “It was exciting to see that many younger ones coming out to run.”

Madill will host the Cat Run this Saturday, September 4, 2021, at City Lake off of City Lake Road with a 9:00 a.m. start time.
