Madill sweeps Lone Grove on hardwood

The ninth-ranked Madill Lady Wildcats ran their season record to 4-1 and the Wildcats notched their first win of the season last week in a solid basketball sweep on the road at Lone Grove.

In the opening contest, they stifled the hosts in the opening period to take control before cruising in the second half for the 44-26 triumph.

On the boys’ side, Coach William Bencoma’s young squad came up with its best performance of the season to post the 54-50 victory.

Both Madill squads will face hefty competition this weekend in festival action at Yukon to wrap up the 2024 portion of the schedule.

Coach Eric Holmes’ Lady Wildcats tangle with Class 4A’s 15th ranked Weatherford at 3 p.m. on Friday and then challenge 5A contender Lawton MacArthur at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Wildcats face off with LawtonMacat1:30onFriday before taking on Class 5A Western Heights at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Girls

Freshman Elexis Holmes tossed in eight of Madill’s 10 first quarter points and the Lady Wildcats limited the hosts to just three points to take control.

LoneGrovemadeasecond period run to narrow the gap to 16-11 at intermission, but the Lady Wildcats responded with a monster third stanza by outscoring the hosts 15-4 andpulledaway.Holmesand Luci Douglas each tossed in five points during the Madill flurry.

The visitors then finished it off with 13 points in the final quarter as La’Miyah Brown and Chloe Miller pumped in four apiece in that burst.

Holmes canned three treys and wrapped up with a game-high 18 points. Brown and Douglas tallied nine points each to fall just shy of double figures. Miller and Arlette Andrade contributed four apiece.

Boys

Madill made an early statement by pouring in 17 first quarter points spurred by the one-two combination of junior Jagger Rogers and sophomore Ryan Anderson.

The duo tossed in six points apiece to stake the Wildcats to a 17-13 edge but watched the Longhorns narrow the lead to 31-30 at the half.

Anderson poured in eight third quarter points to fuel a 13-10 scoring spree that pushed the advantage to 4440 and both squads knocked in 10 in the final period.

Rogers led the scoring charge with 19 points as Anderson was just behind with 18 for the Wildcats arsenal.

Cash Cooper added six, Sammy Duran had four, Gilberto Grimaldo tossed in three with Adrian Gomez chipping in the final two points..
