Madill softball season ends with McGuinness loss

A late lead slipped away in the final inning and Madill saw its fastpitch season come to an end with an 8-7 loss to Bishop McGuinness in the Class 4A regional tournament last week in Elk City.

The Lady Wildcats, which finished with a 7-21 record, also dropped a 12-0 decision to the host Elkettes to begin the event.

In that first outing, Ireland Groeber notched the only Madill with a fourth inning single to centerfield, while they yielded 12 unearned runs thanks to five defensive miscues.

Things were looking good against McGuinness as the Lady Wildcats scored at least once in each of the first four innings and looked to be on the verge of a run rule before the bats went silent.

Madill plated three runs in the opening stanza fueled by RBI hits from Laila Pickens and La Taylor. They scored another in the second as Dahlia Marris singled and came around to score on a Groeber ground out.

The Lady Wildcats cashed in two free passes and a Lady Irish error for a run in the third frame and finally they cashed in a Marris lead off double on the way to a pair of tallies in the fourth.

Leading 7-1, Madill watchedBishopMcGuinness cash in four unearned runs to get back in the game but it was still a 7-5 edge with three outs to go. That’s when two errors kept the inning alive before a game-tying double to force extra innings.

Madill’s offense managed just two hits over the final five stanzas and McGuinness finally capitalized with a run in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

Marris went the distance in the pitching circle on 119 pitches and was the tough luck losing pitcher, yielding eight runs but only one of which was earned. She scattered nine hits and struck out one while not walking a single batter.

She also led the Lady Wildcat offense with two hits, including a double, and scored three times. Lauren Campbell also contributed a double with Pickens, Taylor and Brooklyn Washington adding a single apiece.
