The Madill High School Golf teams teed off on April 5, 2021 at the Lakeview Golf Course in Plainview. Head Coach Adam Potter said the tournament may have been smaller than normal, but the competition was just as tough.

“This tournament was smaller but with some impressive competition,” Potter said. “The first-place individual score was a 68 and the first place team score was 300.”

Ezekiel Fuentes led the Wildcats with a score of 94; Greg Padgett with a 99; Brylan James scored 107; Joshua Johnson pinned a 113 and Christian Lanning with a 135. Total team score was 413. Potter said the team needs more practice on various courses.

“[The] course was in good condition and fairly open. Where we struggled some was putting on the faster greens,” said Potter. “Definitely need to spend some extra time practicing putting.”

The Falconhead Golf tournament was held on April 6 in Turner. Ian Zang shot an 88, which Potter said was the best score yet.

“This is the first tournament we had a player shoot under 90,” said Potter. “Zang received twelfth [place] out of 75,” said Potter. Brylan James scored 97 with this being his first time to shoot in the 90s, Potter noted.

“So, to have two of our golfers post their lowest scores of the year so far was great.”

Greg Padgett shot 104; Joshua Johnson shot 123; Colby Lambertsen shot 121. The teams’ total points was 410. “The course itself is long and tight with a lot of out of bounds areas,” Potter said. “Hitting out of bounds is the worst penalty area to hit into in golf because it requires you to hit again from the spot you previously hit from while also taking a stroke.”

“The windy conditions added difficulty to an already difficult course,” Potter continued. “I’m proud of their improvement and performance today. Looking forward to what the rest of our season holds.”

The boys team travel to Atoka on April 16.

The Madill High School Girls Golf Team teed off on April 6 at Sulphur. Kellanie Lowe led the team with a score of 104. Head Coach Jennifer Rushing said the second half of the tournament did not go well.

“The wind hurt us more as the day went on,” Rushing said. “All the girls did great on the first nine holes. The second round not so good.”

Abby Zang shot 110; Belen Moreno with 113; Samantha Salinas shot 119; and Jaelen Williams with 135.

“Tee shots were going wide and we were taking more putts than we should of when we reached the greens,” said Rushing. “Overall, I was so proud of them for taking off strokes from our last outing to Dornick. The girls were excited about how they played.”
