The Madill cross country teams headed to Edmond Santa Fe high school for the pre-state meet on Saturday, September 26. Head coach Cale Eidson said they didn’t perform at their best.

“We didn’t run as well as we should have,” Eidson said.” We can do better.”

The high school girls took eighth overall. Eidson said two runners ran well.

“Isabel and Valeria ran well,” said Eidson. “Both girls have been focused on their running and maintained being in the top. Each girl pushes herself to run hard at each meet.”

With seconds between them, Junior Isabel Sanchez took third place with a time of 12:37.68, and with a time of 12:37.99 Senior Valeria Calderon took fourth place. Other Madill participants: Junior Carol Moreno (14:30); Junior Joslyn Stumblingbear (14:40); Senior Maritsa Mendez (15:18); Junior Nathali Ibarra (15:25); Senior Lala Flores (15:27); Freshman Korlee Cunningham (15:32); Freshman Ariana Espinoza (16:11); Senior Fernanda Hernandez (16:13); Freshman Esperanza Hernandez (16:23); Freshman Yailin Serrano (17:08); and Senior Mariana Mendez (20:26).

The high school boys didn’t fare well, Eidson noted.

“The boys didn’t run well. We can run way better, and we know we should be.”

The boys only had seven runners due to covid and ineligibility, and took ninth place overall. No one placed in the top ten. Eidson that was a hard pill to swallow.

“Not having any of our boys place in the top 10 is disappointing,” said Eidson. “We must do better.”

Boy participants were: Senior Miguel Duran (18:13); Junior Anthony Sanchez (18:41); senior Brodie Tull (19:04); Sophomore Sergio Hernandez (20:22); Freshman Osvaldo Ariciaga (21:34); Freshman Armando Gonzalez (22:20); and senior Gael Salinas (22:34).

“We have next week off with the Reuel Little being canceled,” Eidson said. “We need to regroup, run better, and become more focused before our next meet. The teams will travel to Waurika on October 10.
