Lady Wildcats get first state wrestling placers

Madill finished with its first two girls state wrestling placers in school history last weekend as Anglena Mendiola claimed third and Madelyn Ritchie finished fourth in the Class 5A state field at State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City.

Competing in the 235-pound bracket, Mendiola got off to a rough start with a 43-second fall defeat to Little Axe’s Chloe Vawter in round one before shaking off the butterflies with a strong showing through the elimination bracket.

The Lady Wildcat grappler snagged an injury forfeit over Melania Nenaikita from McLoud ahead of a back-to-back first period fall triumphs. She stopped Cynthya Lover of Kiefer in 1:53 and then dispatched Tuttle’s Kurstynn Walker in the third-place showdown.

Ritchie took a similar path at 190 pounds, falling to Alyvia EdwardsfromWagonerin a 12-2 major decision during her first match but bounced back in style.

She outlasted Torri Dobbins from Skiatook in a 5-0 decisionandHarrah’sLaycee Johnson by a 7-0 margin. A first period fall loss to Tulsa McLain standout Harmoni Callins left her in fourth place.

Madill picked up a win by Morgan Walls at 170 pounds as she worked into the bracket with a 1:08 fall victory facing Xaxvel Piedra of Stilwell before suffering a pair of losses.

In the boys’ bracket at 120 pounds, Triston Barnes was impressive in a 13-2 major decision against Caleb Miller from Fort Gibson but ran into a buzz saw in the semifinals, losing to eventual champ Cooper Jackson of Tuttle in a 12-1 major decision.

Gibson reached the consolation semifinals ahead of bowingoutofthetournament with an 18-1 technical fall against Sulphur’s Landon Jones.
