Coach Chad Rumer and his girls have found tough sledding lately. It’s hard to take on a 6A opponent when you are not quite hitting on all cylinders. And such was the case on Thursday (Dec. 10th) afternoon.

The Ladies from KHS start the tournament against El Reno. The lineup did look a little more recognizable with the return of seniors Kassie Bailey and Dana Wagnon. Bailey had missed the previous game due to illness. Junior Avri Weeks remains out recovering from surgery.

First quarter action was a scrap. Wagnon was back with a vengeance. She was rebounding, defending, and bringing the ball up court at times. Bailey was not up to 100% and left the court at the 5:40 mark not returning until 2 min. left in the quarter. The quarter ended with the ladies trailing 15 to 17.

In the third things began to look better. Britt Henderson had a nice three and a two point bucket. Bailey was getting to the line. She was 5 of 5 and had a bucket. Freshman Kamry Bohannon got playing time and made the most of it. She had a three and two free throws. As a team, they drew three offensive fouls in the quarter and took a lead, 37 to 30, to the locker room.

Third quarter and the tight game continued. Presley McKnight continued to shoot well after hitting a three pointer in the first she hit again for three and a two point bucket. Wagnon was hustling and had two buckets and a free throw. The Lady Redskins were clinging to a 51 to 49 lead at the buzzer.

The fourth quarter proved to be a deal breaker. Going cold would be an understatement. More like frigid. Had Kassie Bailey not hit two free throws they would have been shut out for the quarter. El Reno soon tied the game at 51 all. They never looked back and streaked to a 61 to 53 victory.

The game was not without its high spots however. The return of the two seniors seemed to have a settling affect on the team, especially on the defensive end of the court. After the game Coach Rumer had this to say “I did see improvement tonight, but you can’t expect to go a quarter without a field goal and win a game”. Senior Tyla Bohannon commented “We have got to put two good halves together in order to win”. But she is still confident that they will bounce back.

Game Stats: Bailey was 7 of 7 from the line and had a field goal for a 9 point total. Bohannon T., had two free throws. Henderson was 2 of 2 from the line and had a three point and a two point bucket for a total of 7. McKnight had two three point goals and a two for a total of 8. Wagnon was 1 of 2 from the line and 5 field goals for 11 points to lead the team. Bohannon K., was 3 of 4 from the line and had a three and a two point field goal for 8 points. Herndon had a field goal for 2. Emi O’Steen had two field goals for 4 points. Raegan Davis had a field goal, 2 points.

The girls will be back for a 10:00 am Friday matchup with Mount St. Marys who were thrashed by #1 in Class 6A Moore.
