The Lady Redskins junior varsity traveled to Atoka on Jan. 23 to begin the Wampus Cat Classic.

There, the younger Kingston athtletes faced the Lone Grove Lady Longhorns varsity squad.

Lone Grove beat Kingston by a score of 46-31.

Due to the varsity already playing in the Harrah, Mid-America and their own New Years Classic, Coach Chad Rumer elected to play the tournament with the players that had not played in the other tournaments.

Individuals are only allowed to play in three tournaments per season.

So this squad was made up of mostly freshman, nine to be exact. It did however allow Rumer to bring and play junior Avri Weeks who was unable to play in previous tournaments. Weeks is still on a limited playing time schedule (due to injury).

The first quarter began with Weeks, Ethel Stewart, Lainey French, Tylee Shown and Cloe Cargill on the court. With Weeks and Stewart in the post the Lady Redskins were not giving up much in the height department.

In the limited time she was available, Weeks connected on two inside field goals but was unable to convert on her two free throw attempts.

French added a three point goal and Brittany O’Steen and Stewart both had free throws. This was good enough to take a 9 to 8 lead after one.

In the second quarter the Ladies were able to pick up the scoring a bit.

However the Lady Horns were as well.

This time Weeks made the most of her time by hitting three field goals and was three for three from free throw line. Kaya Weibner had two three pointers.

This was must have been a message for her brother, Dakota, who is known for his long range shooting for the Redskins. At that point, the Lady

At that point, the Lady Longhorns had pulled to a 30 to 24 lead.

The third started off well with Weibner hitting another three pointer.

Cargill hit a three.

Weeks however was struggling from the free throw line. She was one of four.

And then the well dried up. No more scoring. The third ended with the Lady Redskin JV trailing the Lone Grove Longhorns Varsity, 38 to 31.

The fourth quarter was over and the ladies from KHS fell by 15 to Lone Grove, 46 to 31.

Final stats: Weeks lead the team with 14 points, Weibner had 9, French and Cargill each had 3 pointers. Stewart and Brittany O’Steen had 1 point each.

After the game Coach Rumer stated “I thought we played pretty well in the first half. We worked hard the whole game, just had to many turnovers late”.

Sophmore Alyssa Henry and junior Avri Weeks agreed that they thought they had played well despite not having played much together.

The JV squad will return at 1:40 pm Friday to take on the loser of Durant and Atoka.
