Kingston’s playoff run ends with Alva

The second round play-off game between the Kingston Redskins and the Alva Goldbugs took place at the Redskins’ home stadium Friday, November 17. Kingston took an early lead, but failed to keep it as the Goldbugs pulled ahead. In retaliation, Kingston fought back and managed to gain traction in the final moments, however the Goldbug lead was too much and the Redskins lost in the second round of the playoffs.

The game began with a Kingston kickoff, the Goldbugs starting their drive on the 31-yard line. Immediately, Alva fumbled the ball, allowing Brayden Ellisor to recover and run to the 34. Alva retaliated with an interception on the far 34 and moved to the 25 where they, once again, fumbled the ball, with Ellisor recovering the ball for a second time on the far 25.

The home team advanced to the 35 where Parks Ratzlaff made a 65-yard charge across the field to the endzone, scoring the first touchdown of the game and Jamie Lewis tacked on the extra point making the score 7-0 at the 5:15 mark.

The Goldbugs started on the far 26 and moved to the 30 where, despite Kingston's efforts, they blitzed across the field in a 70-yard run, ending in a touchdown; This touchdown and extra point tied the score 7-7 at the 3:03 mark. Kingston advanced to the 30 after the kickoff, and proceeded to the 25, where a fumble by Ratzlaff and subsequent mid-air recovery by Sam Walker saved the ball and allowed Kingston to make it to the Goldbug’s 12-yard line before the quarters end.

The second quarter began with Kingston attacking on the Goldbug’s 15-yard line. Immediately after, the Redskins fumbled and Alva took advantage, recovering and running to the far 17. From there, the away team advanced,eventuallymaking it to the Redskins’ 4, scoring their second touchdown. This touchdown gave the Goldbug the lead, bringing the score to 7-14 at the 5:24 mark. After the kickoff, Kingston made it to the 26 and moved to the 35, where they punted. Alva slowly proceeded to the 35 from the far 28, however they were intercepted by Eli Oliger, leaving the Redskins on the far three-yard line at the end of the half.

The third quarter began with a Goldbug kickoff, Logan Stevans returning the Redskin ball to the Goldbugs 34-yard line. Kingston made their way to the three where, with the aid of the offensiveline, Reid Patterson dashed into the endzone, and tied the game 14-14 at the 9:22 mark. After the kickoff, Alva attempted to advance from the 35 to the 38, but Aiden Donnel’s tackle stalled them until they punted. Kingston startedonthefar19andmanaged to move to the Goldbug’s 24 before punting, as well. Alva caught the ball on the 42, however, penalties and the home team's d-line forced them back to the 36 as the quarter came to a close.

The fourth quarter began with Alva punting from their own 36. Kingston started their drive on the far 44-yard line.The drive eventually stalled and what looked like a punt turned into a nifty fake punt that ended with Oliger running down to the 15, putting Kingston in the red zone. After several unsuccessful runs, the Redskins were forced to field goal.

Lewis nailed the kick, breaking the tie 17-14. After the kickoff, Alva started at the far 35 and swiftly proceeded to the midline where they made a 50-yard charge to the goal line, earning their third touchdown and securing the extra point making the score 21-17 at the 6:12 mark. Kingston started the drive on the 20-yard line with 5:20 left in the game.

After a good run, a penalty on the GoldBugs, and a great catch by Cash Walker, the Redskins advanced to the 48. An untimely fumble gave the Goldbugs the ball on the Redskins 36-yard line. Immediately after, Alva dashed into the endzone and secured the extra point, taking the score to 17-28 at the 2:52 second mark.

After the kickoff, Kingston started the drive on Alva’s 38. Patterson immediately threw to Cash Walker and the Redskins moved the ball to their own 40. After another catch by Walker and one by Ratzlaff, the Redskins moved to their own four yardline. Delton O’Steen was able to pushtheballintotheendzone making the score 23-28 at the 1:45 mark after a failed two point conversion. Kingston attempted an on-side kick, but Alva was able to secure the ball, and eventually ran the clock out, making Kingston fall to Alva, 23-28. The Redskins finished the season 10-2, District Champions, and with one play-off win. Alva will go on to play Kiefer in the next round.
