Kingston sweeps Valliant in baseball battles

The Kingston Redskins utilized some late-inning dramatics for an opening victory and then strong pitching in game two for an important District 3A-8 baseball sweep of Valliant last week.

Coach Darron Henson’s squad allowed at least one run in every inning but got the key RBI single from Reid Patterson in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the 11-10 triumph. Hayden Seeney meanwhile was stellar in the second contest, twirling a complete game shutout for a 9-0 Kingston win.

Thoseprovedtobetheonly Redskin victories of the week however as they dropped two contests in the Murray County Festival, falling to Sulphur by a 7-3 count and Stonewall, 4-2.

Kingston matched Valliant nearly run for run each stanza except for a five-run Redskin outburst in the fourth and they never trailed again.

Rhett Coble and Ewan Weaver each notched singles to get things rolling in the pivotal frame before two-out hitsfromLanderBurkhalter, Ethan Mowles and Brock Rumer.

It was Rumer that also ignited the seventh inning, posting a leadoff single and eventually coming around to score on Patterson’s game winner.

Seeney’s pitching masterpiece was the story of the game two shutout of the Bulldogs as he fired all seven stanzas, scattering six hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Kingston plated three runs in the third, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and two more in the seventh to wrap up the scoring while making the most of five hits. Seeney and Burkhalter tallied a double apiece with Weaver and Blane Henry each driving in two with singles. Brady Greene had the other Redskin hit.

Offense was in short supply against Sulphur as Kingston managed just one hit but pushed three runs across. Rumer accounted for the lone hit with a leadoff single in the third inning.

Scoring was limited in the Stonewall defeat as well as the Redskins trailed 4-0 until the seventh when a late comeback bid came up just short.

Patterson walked to start the final frame and came around to score after a Greene double and Seeney groundout. Burkhalter chipped in a RBI hit as well but the rally ended there.

Next on the schedule for the Redskins is the Annual Kingston Invitational that will run from Thursday through Saturday.
