Junior quarterback Reid Patterson threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth in just the first half last week to fuel a 42-12 romp over Prague on Senior Night last week.
With the win, Kingston improved to 7-1 overall and still unbeaten at 5-0 in district action with a massive showdown Friday on the road at fellow state Top 10 member Hugo.
Patterson wasted little time in putting the Redskins out in front, connecting with Parks Ratzlaff on a 70yard touchdown pass on the game’s opening play from scrimmage.
The Redskins added another score on their next possession as Patterson found a wide open Ty Jones for a 31-yard strike with less than four minutes gone.
Prague answered with a methodical march deep into Kingston territory before Sam Walker thwarted the Red Devils with another inception.
Ratzlaff bolted 56 yards on the next play and Patterson raced to paydirt from 25 yards out to cap an emphatic 81-yard, two-play scoring drive that culminated with still 41 seconds left in the first stanza.
Kingston’s fourth possession found the end zone as well with Patterson tossing a 46-yard touchdown pass to Jones for a 28-0 edge with 7:27 left in the half.
The visitors finally broke on the board with a touchdown with 41 seconds to go before intermission, but that proved to be way too much time.
Hudson Everhart scampered 39 yards to the Prague 26 with the following kickoff and two plays later Kingston hit paydirt for the fifth time on a Patterson 13-yard connection to Cash Walker.
Senior Blake Wise added a pinball-like 77-yard touchdown burst midway through the third period for the Redskins’ final points of the night.
“We had a lot to play for on Senior Night and we started fast,” head coach Brad Hill said. “The seniors were emotionally invested, and our underclassmen wanted to get the seniors a chance to play at home again in the playoffs. It was a tremendous all-around effort.”
In total, the Redskins amassed 490 yards on only 27 offensive plays.
Patterson completed all five of his passes for 173 yards with Wise connecting on his three attempts also for 54 yards through the air.
Ratzlaff rushed twice for 73 yards and Wise added three carries for 92 yards. Pattersonchippedin36yards on three totes, Walker carried twice for 23 yards, Eli Oliger rushed once for 18 yards and had 30 yards of two receptions.
It didn’t take long for the Redskins to get through the Senior Night celebration and take aim for a pivotal league contest with Hugo this week that could decide the district champ.
The Buffaloes are currently tied with Kiefer in second at 4-1 on the season.
“Hugo is explosive offensively and their defense really flies around and is well coached,” Hill commented. “It’s going to be a challenge for us. We’ve got to go to their place and it could be adverse conditions with the weather. We need to play well.
“The thing is, everyone knows what we are playing for. It’s a chance to secure the district championship for us, which has been one of our goals. It is also a game that could leave you anywhere from first to third in the district standings so it’s really big. With a win we’ll have a chance to host the first two playoff games, which is extremely important in the postseason.”
