The Lady Redskins traveled to Tishomingo on Feb. 7 to take on the Lady Indians. The Lady Redskins were very good on this night and they came away with a 76 to 41 victory.
The starting lineup saw the return of Avri Weeks. Coach Rumer has been trying to bring her along slowly and we saw her playing without restraints. It has been approximately ten and one half months of surgery and grueling rehab to get her to this point. The Lady Redskin fans know what a difficult ordeal this has been for her and they all are happy to see her progress.
In the first, Coach Chad Rumer had his girls ready and they exploded to the tune of 24 points and a stifling defense that allowed but 7 points. The Lady Indians were unable to handle the full court pressure they encountered. They had turnover after turnover. Many of these were in the back court and this shortened up the court and Britt Henderson made them pay. She hit three long range three point goals. Dana Wagnon scored two inside buckets and a free throw. This is where it got interesting . With the breakneck pace, both on offense and defense ,Rumer began subbing out to keep fresh players. They responded on both ends of the court. Kamrey Bohannon had a three and two free throws. Ryan Herndon had a three and Emi O’Steen had a field goal. That was ten points from the bench. That’s a luxury any coach would be happy for. The Tish girls heads were spinning. When asked later about the first quarter being perhaps the best quarter of the season he said “I agree, it may have been”. At the end of one the score was 24 to 7.
In the second, the Lady Indians found the basket a few times more than the previous quarter but the Lady Redskins were still on a scoring spree. This time Kassie Bailey hit from three range and had two free throws.
Wagnon continued to pound away underneath. She had two more field goals and a free throw. Bohannon (K) had a field goal as did her big sister Tyla.
Weeks was one of three from the line. At the end of the first half the Lady Redskins were enjoying a 41 to 22 lead.
Third quarter action saw another outburst of scoring for the Lady Redskins. It would be a 23 point effort this time. Wagnon had seven points, Henderson another three and two free throws, Pressley McKnight had four points, Bailey had three. Then, an odd thing happened. A three point attempt was good by the opponent in the Lady Redskin basket. The score after three quarters, 64 to 34.
In the fourth quarter scoring was Bohannon (T) for 4, Bohannon (K) 2, Bailey 2, Weeks 2, and Wagnon 2. Also seeing minutes in the fourth quarter, Lainey French, Regan Davis, Ethel Stewart, Chole Cargal, Allysa Henry and Brittany O’Steen. Final score 76 to 41.
Final stats: Wagnon had 19, Henderson had 17, followed by Bailey who had 10. Bohannon (K) scored 9 followed by Bohannon (T) with 6. McKnight had 4 followed by Weeks and Herndon with 3 each. O’Steen (E) had two points. And yes if you were wondering, Kassie Bailey had another “charging foul taken”. She leads the state in this category (surely).
After and hard couple of practices, Coach Rumer was proud of the way his team responded. Next week the Lady Redskins host Lone Grove on Tuesday night and travel to Comanche on Friday.
