Kingston v Plainview

The Redskins and Coach Taylor Wiebener took on the Plainview Indians at the KMAC on January 25, 2022. The Redskins rebounded from their loss to Madill in the Atoka Tournament with a good Lake Country Conference win over the Indians with the final score of 66 to 40.

The Plainview Indians were not particularly tall and Coach Wiebener must have seen that his team would not have a problem reboundingand rebound they did. They were also looking for Reed Cason to have a big night inside. He responded with three relatively easy buckets inside.

Mason Burkhalter and Braden Matchen also had buckets. Everyone seemed to be in on the rebounding, on both ends of the court. The lead was four at the end of the first quarter, 10 to 6 and that was as close as the Indians would get all night.

In the second, everyone wanted in on the action. Brady Brister had three buckets and a free throw. Dakota Wiebener added a three pointer and a layup. Matchen again scored inside.

Cason continued where he left off with two more inside buckets, one was a two-handed slam dunk. He followed that up with a blocked shot on the other end. The Redskins carried that momentum to a half time lead of 16 points. The score was 28 to 12 going into half time.

In the third quarter, the inside play of Matchen, Brister, and Cason took care of any ideas of a comeback by the Indians. Cason had two more buckets, but missed both his free throw attempts. Brister scorched the visitors withfourfield goals. Matchen had three buckets and a free throw. Plainview could not mount any offensive threat. They now trailed going to the fourth, 47 to 20.

Coach Wiebener got into his bench quickly after the fourth quarter began. The players again had another good outing. Tucker “Deadeye” Rumer knocked down two three-pointers and had a layup. Brycen Ward hit a pretty three-pointer and added a field goal underneath drew the foul, and hit his free throw. Drew Anderson hit his only three-point attempt. Rafe Patterson hit a bucket. When the horn sounded, the Redskins were up by 26 bringing the final score 66 to 40 in their favor.

Rumer had eight, Wiebener with five, Ward with five, Patterson and Burkhalter both had two points. 3 of 9 for the team from the line. The rebounding was outstanding. Buckhalter, Brister, Matchen and Cason ruled the boards on both ends. Brister and Matchen each had blocked shots.

Kingston v Byng

The Redskins faced the Byng Pirates on January 28, 2022. They came ready to play, the Byng Pirates, not so much. The Redskins stepped on the gas and never let up. Redskins 55 to 35.

Brady Brister came out firing and hit the first three buckets of the game. Byng called time out at the 6:53 mark. Brister kept firing and hit two more before another Redskins could score. It was a 12-point quarter for him.

Cason Reed had two nice inside buckets. Mason Burkhalter and Cole Morgan each had buckets. Dakota Wiebener hit a three-pointer. At the buzzer, the Redskins were up by 12, 23 to 11.

In the second, the Pirate ship ran aground. The Redskins scored 11 points, but the Pirates could only manage a single field goal. Brister tacked another two field goals on to his total. Wiebener had another three.

Burkhalter got to on a drive to the bucket. Cason was the only one getting to the line. He was 2 of 2. The score after two quarters was 34 to 13.

Coming out of half time, the Pirates did better. They scored 12 points in the third. They were in such a hole, it wasn’t enough. The Redskins managed only six points. Buckhalter had a bucket. Cason had two of his own. After three, Redskin’s lead was 40 to 25.

Brister and Burkhalter made sure that this game stayed out of reach for Byng. Brister added six more to his total. Burkhalter had two field goals and a free throw. At the 2:00 mark of the fourth quarter, Byng had had enough and went to the bench. Coach Wiebener did the same. Morgan and Eli Oliger each had buckets. The final score gave Redskins the win; 55 to 35.

The Box score: Brister lead the team with 22 points. Most of his goals were on hard drives to the goal. Somehow he managed to not have a single free throw attempt. Kingston v Vanoss

The Redskins played the Vanoss Wolves on January 29, 2022, for their Homecoming game. Unfortunately, the Redskins lost to the Class A fifth ranked team, 46 to 40.

The win on Friday night was costly for Coach Taylor Wiebener and his Redskins. Senior Braden Matchen suffered a knee injury early in the game and did not return. He was in street clothes for this game. Even though Matchen was sidelined, he was crowned 2022 Homecoming King, and Raegan Davis was crowned Homecoming Queen.

Tucker Rumer got to start in the Vanoss game in place of Matchen. Brady Brister got off to another good start. He hit a three and was fouled on the shot. He hit the free throw for a four point play. Then, he started his drive outside and slashed to the rim where he had two more field goals.

He capped off the quarter with another three-pointer. Dakota Wiebener had a three and Reed Cason had an inside bucket. So far so good, the Redskins had a five-point lead after one, 15 to 10.

The Redskins could only manage a five-point quarter in the second. Cason had a bucket and was fouled, he converted the free throw. Cole Morgan had a bucket. Meanwhile the Wolves scored 18 and took the lead at the half, 28 to 20.

The shots did not fall in the third quarter. Cason had three buckets. Mason Burkhalter got his first bucket. With an eight-point quarter, the Redskins held the Wolves to six and trailed by six, 34 to 28.

The Wolves head coach spread his team out wide on the floor with his center out high. He was trying to lure Cason out away from the basket. It worked to a point as they had several layups off this, they also threw it away several times.

Cason was held to one fourth quarter bucket. Brister had three field goals. Tucker Rumer and Morgan had field goals. With fouls to give, Vanoss would foul the Redskins as they crossed mid court. In fact, they had plenty to give, they were setting on two team fouls.

They were able to disrupt the offense and the Redskins would have to inbound the ball again. No coming back on this night. Vanoss holds on for a six point win, 46 to 40.

Box score: Brister led with 16 points, followed by Cason with 11. Wiebener had three, Morgan, Rumer and Burkhalter each had two. For the game, as a team, from the line, 2 of 2 for 100%.

The free throw situation is strange at best. The Redskins cannot get to the line. In the two games this weekend, the Redskins had a grand total of seven free throw attempts. In our favor, we did hit five of them. Brady Brister scored 38 total points and had one free throw attempt.
